You have the connect number have you it used to be on their site but cannot find a trace of it now . Wombat .

Clara.net 020 7206 9445 or Tesco.net 01256 758717

Virgin.net 01483 881766 seems to have stopped working, anyone have a working geo number for them?

Steve Terry

18866 offer postpay by DD?? i'll have to have another look at their site, if they offer it, that's the way to go

Steve Terry

Well I take your point but on that basis one is supposing that they are a bunch of crooks. I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt but be aware that there are questions as to the viability of their business model, because if something looks too good to be true it usually is!

Cheers

Richard

Nope, i've been through the sign up procedure on

formatting link
but by page 4 they want a credit card. No sign of any DD sign up, so how did you do it??

Steve Terry

They will accept a debit card but I have not any mention of DD incidentally Steve the tesco and clara Geo numbers do not seen to work anymore just been trying them . Wombat

Yes they will accept a Debit card with continuous authority, it's post pay by Direct Debit that is safe

Sending this with tesco.net on it's 01296 dial up at 9k6 using an Orange OVP T Mobile FT750

clara.net 020 was also working fine last night

Sounds like you wisely took the option on 18866's web site to pay by Solo/Maestro (Direct Debit) rather than Visa, Master or Euro (Continuous Authorisation).

This is the old/original confusion, whether you pay using a Debit Card or a Credit Card the method by which you pay is *still* a Continuous Authority. There have been long arguments (in this thread?) about whether a Continuous Authority is safer on a Credit or Debit Card but there isn't a big difference (I don't think so anyway).

A Direct Debit is another beast altogether and isn't associated with any sort of card. If you can make such payments using DD it's generally safer than any sort of Contonuous Authority.

But isn't Solo/Maestro a **debit card**, and NOT a **Direct Debit** ??

Debit cards also allow "continuous authorities", which are certainly *not* direct debits....

Nither would let me in using a PC and modem !!. Wombat .

Why all the doubts 18866 is the ONE company I would trust in the UK they have never put a foot wrong with my invoices which is more than I can say for BT and Telewest . Wombat

Sweet. I bet all scamsters would love to have customers who were like you!

Scamsters do exist, you know. Or maybe you feel that scamsters never give a good deal?

----

Thousands of people get scammed by offers which so entrance them by the improbably good deal being put forward that they forget to exercise their normal judgement. They closed their eyes.

I am not saying 18866 are a bunch of scamsters. There is no evidence of that. And I don't think you can say they are not scamsters. Because there is no evidence of that either.

----

I am saying that if you get offered a deal which is too good to be true then perhaps it is, er, too good to be true.

Just because their billing is pretty accurate, as you point out, doesn't tell you if there is a problem or not. I don't think anyone said they were "ha'penny slicing" on bills by unfair rounding.

Having used 18866 for over a year now, without a problem, and watched their prices fall throughout, I am left wondering why you have this campaign to smear them.

I have never heard any murmur of complaint about their billing system. I cvan't think of any other telco that this is true of.

I can only assume that you have a hidden agenda to diss them.

It just makes me consider you a dubious source of information.

They would gain many sceptical customers if they did, Tiscali can manage postpay by DD, so should they

Steve Terry

You have your banks Direct Debit guarantee to protect you with DD

Exactly - only with DD, *not* with continuous authorities!

David's right - you're obsessed. Perhaps 18866 is run by mad people. Perhaps they're backed by a philanthropist who's making up for his great-great-grandfather's exploitation of cotton mill workers in Lancashire by spending his family fortune on funding cheap phone calls. Perhaps it's an attempt by space aliens to take over the earth by beaming special secret radio waves through the phones of people using

18866. Or perhaps it's a tax loss for some other company. I, along with Wombat, couldn't give a tinker's dam.

It's 1p flat rate for landline calls. I like paying 1p flat rate for landline calls.

If you feel suspicious enough of it, don't use it.

Which begs the question why havn't they? Maybe it is the cost factor? Would DD be more costly to them than Debit Card or Credit Card transactions? They say they are "working on a solution to offer this in the future". Anyone know how long they have been saying this?

Hi Iain

You say you may have to consider me "dubious source of info". Well I can honestly say I don't think you can't ever have learnt much about information about phones from me. OTOH I have learnt a lot from your GSM web pages.

In the case of 18866 I am sceptical. I am rather suspicious of a company which charges almost nothing for its services and asks its customers to sign continuous credit agreements with an anonymous overseas company. It's too weird to be seen as normal.

I have posted, at length sometimes, the basis for my suspicions. I have not made up any "facts". My info should not be seen as dubious as I have given links to any sources.

I know that many here in these groups, perhaps including yourself, are very happy with the service from 18866. I am a customer of

18866 too and I am happy with the dirt-cheap service. But it just doesn't seem to add up.

A parallel example might be an ultra-cheap net-based fax service (assuming nothing like TPC

formatting link
existed). The service might offer to sent 10 faxes of any length for you to anywhere in the world for only 1p. The only unusual thing is that they are based in the Cayman Islands and are entirely anonymous and ask you to enter into a Continuous Credit Authorisation agreement with them on your credit card. Do you what I mean? I am not saying that that arrangement necessarily makes them scamsters but something just doesn't add up.

I have been involved in setting up anonymous overseas companies. I can say categorically that no one sets up an anonymous overseas company to trade in the UK without a reason.
