Advice on Credit Report

Hi,

I'm after a little advice. I could wait and find out, but would prefer a bit of a heads-up.

I pay my credit card off completely every month and have done since I don't know when. I used to pay by direct banking payment, but recently (January) I had the need to pay via the card's website via maestro. I went through all the usual - entering number and such - and then got to a screen which unfortunately I didn't read properly - I thought it was card insurance or something so clicked cancel. It turns out that that page was actually the bank's (for the maestro payment) new security feature and was required to complete the transaction. Consequently my payment was missed.

Unfortunately, I didn't spot this until after the payment due date so the card company charged a late payment charge and interest. I phoned them saying that it was a genuine oversight, all the funds were in my maestro account and I could and would have made the payment. They subsequently refunded the interest and late payment charge.

I've now just received a letter saying that my account has been re-assessed, and due to the missed payment, various restrictions have been applied.

I phoned them, and they put me on to Experian, who I phoned and have now ordered a credit report from them so that I can speak to somebody (they won't talk to you unless you have an up to date report!)

My question is, in your valued opinions, am I likely to get this oversight written off? I have always had a good credit score, and due to this new "feature" of the bank's, which I stupidly didn't read, I will be extremely disappointed to find my score tarnished.

Thanks for reading, and for your time.

Firstly, although Experian may hold your credit details, it's not up to them how a CC company or anyone else decides what to make of its contents. So I don't see why having the credit report will get you anywhere with Experian. You'd be shooting the messenger boy. If a CC refuses you credit and you don't know why, a credit report will often explain it. But in this case both you and the CC know the reasons. What the heck's the point in them telling you to contact Experian? The CC shouldn't have referred you to them.

Secondly, I think the CC is being very unreasonable in taking this line with you if, as you say, you have so far been impeccable.

Thirdly, their attitude may be a sign of the times where credit providers are finding any excuse to lower their lending amounts. But I feel you should argue your case with them and don't waste your breath trying to do it with Experian - who won't be able to tell the CC what it should do.

Thanks for the feedback Rob. I was surprised they didn't want anything to do with me, although it sounded like an Indian call centre to be honest - Indian lady and scripted answers. The CC is Barclaycard - was Goldfish. I did have a 10k limit, it's now 450 quid!!

So, from what you're saying I need to get back on to the CC? I guess though, even if I vote with my feet...whilst this mark is on my credit report, I'll be in the same boat with anybody, will I not?

Thanks again for your time.

Not necessarily. If you explain the position to other CCs you may get a better response. They are not all tarred with the same brush.
