Barclaycard: changing from 0870 to 0844

Had a flyer in with my statement today saying that Barclaycard are moving from 0870 to 0844 for their customer services number. Suppose it has to be applauded, but as the flyer says, 0844 will still incur a call setup charge of 6p and then 5p/minute. At least they publish a geographic number.

I rather doubt that their flyer admitted this!

In that case, I wonder why anyone would ever call their 0870 or 0844 numbers? Are they relying on customer ignorance of call charges?

All very well but if you can call geo numbers "free" using a mobile as part of your call allowances than that doesn't help at all

I received that flyer with my very last statement, just after I dumped Barclaycard for other reasons!

Neither have I. Besides, if it worked on CLI, it couldn't be set to block a no CLI situation becasue so often the CLI from international calls is not available - so just block your number if that occurs.

Neither have you *what*? When following up, it's a good idea to leave in the bits you're directly replying to, and to take out irrelevant stuff (such as "Mike" above, being a signature to material which has already been removed). It all needs to make sense, see?

I understand they can distinguish between "withheld" and "international", and so they could conceivably route "withheld" calls to a recording saying "please call the expensive number".

well conceivably, but were talking about organisations that often don't have the nous to implement Presentation Numbers preferring to phone up number Withheld and ask the called party to reveal personal data. Duh.
