The JAMA is one of the world's top three peer reviewed journals. You obviously have no familiarity with medical research or you would know that.

Have you ever done any work with the average voter e.g. telephone polling? In fact telephone polling is a bit misleading as people who do not have phones are even worse off in certain demographic respects than average (I am not talking about income BTW).

I did some phone polling a while back on a voluntary basis and I was absolutely shocked by the level of ignorance and short sightedness of the average person I spoke to. I would estimate based on that experience, that less than 10% of the voters have the slightest comprehension of the issues. This was not because they disagreed with me, as informed voters were on both sides of the fence. Probably on the conservative side there were somewhat more.

I saw a study reported from the US that gives some examples:

- most US voters cannot place the US on a world map.

- most cannot give the population of the US within a factor of 2

- most cannot state US GDP within a factor of 5 etc.

Since then I have had a lot more sympathy with politicians who lie. I seriously wonder if it is possible to tell the truth and to be comprehended.

For a person of even average intelligence the political debate is insultingly simplistic. But remember that the people they are trying to reach are the same people who determine the intellectual level of television.

Well you can try and read between the lines. Look at what they do not what they say and try and reverse engineer what they are on about.

What would be good would be a side channel whereby politicians could communicate with people who are capable of understanding the issues. But as far as I can tell it does not exist. For example members of political parties are fed the same BS as the general public.
