Credit cards and courier services - problem - please help!

Hi,

I am getting incredibly frustrated with Barclays Bank and hope people can offer me alternative suggestions.

My credit card has almost expired so obviously they sent me a new one in the post. However, they have major security arrangements that I am sure did not happen last time. The courier company is insistent that I sign for the card and produce ID which is fine except I am not home when they arrive and I live on my own so attempt re-delivery at an agreed date which of course they do not appear for.

They will deliver to my workplace but cannot specify a time - when I tried it, I was not in so they refused to give it to someone else even though I left my ID with him.

I understand there is a trade off between security and convenience but having now missed delivery on three occasions, this is really too much.

Does anyone know of a bank or credit card company that does the "old fashioned" method of sending out cards by regular post without signing since I cannot guarantee to be in. Ideally, I would like to know from people who have received cards recently, since, as mentioned, years ago Barclays were fine.

Thanks - Darren.

Beneficial send out cards by normal post, and require activation over the phone - at least as of last month. They're also helpful with disputes.....

Can't you ask Barclays to arrange deliver to a local branch, then you can collect (with ID) at your convenience.

MBNA (spit) do likewise.

Can you pick it up from a Barclays branch? Lloyds TSB and HSBC let me do that as an alternative to having their useless courier company deliver it.

Thanks - this is most helpful.

This may seem like a silly question, but does activation have to be from a home phone (landline) since I don't have a landline number (just use mobiles) since I rent?

Or is activation just a question of typing in some numbers on the card and so it doesn't matter where you are calling from?

Don't think there will be a problem with activation via a Mobile as long as you answer all the questions correctly...

I fouled up the automatic engine, and ended up talking to a Real Person (tm) at Beneficial. From a landline, but I don't see why it shouldn't have been from a mobile - needed dob plus some password info. Beneficial customer services are 0870 010 0990 (or try saynoto0870) if you want to check.
