Dixons digital camera - duff

I bought a digital camera for my dad for xmas. It didn't work with his rather prehistoric operating system/computer. I got a USB 2.0 card and installed it. The camera still wasn't detected. Not being sure if we'd bought a camera for an underspecified system, we persevered. I installed Win

98SE. Still no joy.

I knew I was going to upgrade his PC and this I duly did. The system is now XP Professional with plenty of RAM and is in spec. We tried the camera. It detects, but dies half way through the upload to the PC. It then hangs the interface until disconnected.

I've tried the camera on both his and my new system where it does exactly the same thing. It crashes the system. The limited instructions are followed to a T, but the thing is totally frustrating and almost useless.

I bought it about the start of December from Dixons. I haven't got the original receipt, but the camera isn't sold anywhere else as it's licensed to Dixons from Agfa.

After 3 months, should I approach Dixons for a refund (I don't think i'd get one) or would I be better off claiming back from my Delta/Visa card as being unfit for use (how long have I got to determine this?), or just writing it off to experience? The camera cost 50.

Thanks,

Dave

What Model make of Camera is it? have you tryed to download the latest software and Drivers?

I know its not answering you question, but as a IT tech i wouldn`t say the Camera is duff, it just might need the latest software.

If it didn't come with drivers that work on 98se or XP then its duff. Return it for a replacement.

I was going to say buy a card reader. (You can get one for 20 or less. AVoids having dubious camera s/w on your PC and means if you get a different camera you dont have to install more s/w.) But then I realised at 50 it probably doesnt take cards but have its own fixed memory, in which case you should take it back. I dont see why you shouldn't get your money back, just be bolshy about it. FWIW for 50 the results would almost certainly be crap anyway :-)

You can't do chargebacks to delta cards for this reason, so you will have to deal with Dixons.

And then pay three times the price for any upgrades?

Hi Merlin,

It's an AGFA Easypix SX. I've checked the AGFA site and that just says this camera is licenced exclusively to Dixons. I've followed the link but there's no drivers. The camera came with a cd which has software on it, but this is the software that is causing the crashes.

It's a complete duffer and 50 was all i really wanted to pay until I was sure my father would take to it.

How should I approach the refund request? I've tried it now with 2 XP Pro Installations, Win 98SE and Win 98. BUT, it's 3 months since I bought it and I can't find the receipt.

Cheers, Dave

No it doesn't take cards. it doesn''t even have a flash. On the whole it's a poor purchase on my part which i'm now regretting.

take it back and complain firmly (and nicely) asking for your money (despite my comments about being bolshy :-).

Do you have the Visa/delta statement showing the charge? If so that should be sufficient. You can probably get a duplicate statement, but it will cost something. With no proof Dixons won't be bound to refund you but they may do it anyway.

Good idea! - but how does he prove that it was 50 for the camera and not "50 for a lot of batteries" or whatever? :-(

Without a hint of irony, "Tim" astounded uk.finance on 11 Feb

He gets Dixons to confirm to what goods that particular transaction relates?

If that's all that was bought the fact that it's for the right amount should be enough. Even if it isn't I doubt they would quibble.

But how will you get them to understand what a camera is?

I remember a Dixon's that had a knowledgeable manager and a bunch of school children. You had to ask the schoold children any question and then they would queue up to try to repeat the question to the manager. You'd usually have to correct the school children when they asked the question but they manager knew what he was talking about.

I don't think this camera is duff. i have had exactly the same problem with this model. I bought it from dixons on a special christmas offer for £50 reduced from £90.

my operating system is windows XP. I can get the acquire the photos from the camera through a usb port but the software is useless. it crashes halfway through the download every time. i imagine that the software is faulty not the camera but any advice on this would be much appriciated.
