Dormant account reclaim. Can anyone help?

I have been asked by my sister to help in reclaiming a dormant account she held when she was a young woman. The problem is that she cannot reliably remember the name of the bank that held the account. It was situated in the Water Street area of Liverpool in the early 1960's.

My Google skills are not up to snuff for this. Does anyone have any idea where I can find a list of banks that operated in Liverpool at that time? Any pointers will be very welcome.

I dont know of a list online, but on memory I would think that it would most likely be Martins Bank in Water Street, now Barclays. Other Banks in Water Street may have included Lloyds, I think. There was also a branch of either Standard Bank or Standard Chartered close to the corner of Castle Street but as far I can remember this didnt have a 'cash' counter as it mostly only dealt in commercial paper. Most of the other banks in that area were on Castle Street or Dale Street.

I'd start with Barclays if I were you, it used to be next to the Town Hall and the building was, I think, Martins' old Head Office.

I was most impressed by the answer John Boyle gave you. However, if that doesn't help you could go to a main library and get a copy of the Kelly's directory for the year in question that will list all the businesses in the street at the time.
