Is there a site anywhere that compares insurence, particularly travel insurance. I am more interested in how well companies peform with payouts. I currently can't get any resolution to to my holiday claim from Dec 2004. I would go with CIS who seem to perform well with payouts but they wont insure me as there is an ongoing claim.

re. paying out, I would say they are all as bad as each other. In my opinion, most insurance is a complete waste of money, particularly travel insurance. Lua

I have had payouts from the CIS for the car, house (broken windows and the like, contents and they have always been reasonable. The only trouble with CIS is their admin on renewal leaves something to be desired. My current claim for travel loss is split between CIS, who are dealing with specified items on my contents policy and the travel insurance company for everything else. CIS are fine but the travel insurance company are a bunch of padantic bastards. There must be trvel company somewhere who will deal with a claim on a reasonable basis.

It is not worth insuring against anything which has a >1% chance of happening and which you can survive the expense of yourself, IMO. However the 'one in a million' that would wipe you out ought be covered. That means 'plane delays' .. forget it. Major surgery and medical care in USA - get covered. Losing camera in street - forget it. House burning to the ground - get cover.

Say that when you've got sick in Taiwan and need an emergency operation. If you can get back to the UK you'll get it for free, or take your chances with their standards of medicine (and pay for the privilege).
Oh, but you need constant nursing to get you back alive. You'll need a Learjet, then. Two pilots, a doctor and a nurse. That'll be the thick end of 70,000ukp, please. Sorry, sir, we don't take credit cards. Have you got any friends or family who want you alive enough to stump up the cash, and can get it in 24 hours?
Such a shame sir doesn't have travel insurance. Still, we're sure that the consulate will ship sir's body back for the funeral. Sir might want to settle sir's hotel bill in advance though.

Kevin,
Don't know about a site, but I've been using the below for four years - they were originally part of (or affiliated with) Lambeth Building society. In my first year with them I claimed for medical expenses in Austria for a skiing injury for my wife. They paid up within two weeks for the full amount - no quibble. The premium didn't go up (other than a small "cost of living" increase) in subsequent years either. So they'll continue to get my business every year.
