Link cards

Are Link cards without a chip&PIN obsolete in ATMs now? I tried getting some cash out and 1 ATM out of 2 accepted my PIN code but asked for chip&PIN code when I confirmed a cash sum to take out, it was refused. I don't use that account very often hence my ignorance of the changes.

Cheers.

I agree completely hence my surprise. My PIN was accepted but it rejected it for the actual withdrawal and asked for the chip&PIN code. I don't know why the card was accepted at the first stages then rejected after I confirmed the sum I wanted. The other ATM just refused my card immediately! Maybe I was just "lucky" getting a machine that recognized my card but couldn't authorize its use beyond this point. It did look like it was a bit confused about the card, like it didn't know how to process it. They were both Link ATMs but different banks. My card is very old and I put this situation down to the card being obsolete, but just thought it was strange.

The PIN for the ATM should be the same as the one for C&P. I know of no card providers issuing two PIN numbers for the same card for the two different types of transaction. And common sense would say it would be too confusing having two PINs for the same card.

I had this once when I used an ATM not belonging to my bank and got the pin code wrong - it didn't complain until I'd asked for the money. Perhaps you entered the wrong number, or perhaps the pin number is stored on the mag stripe and it's been corrupted?
