Lloyds charges 1 per card payment

Jul 20, 2005 11 Replies

Hi,

Lloyds started to charge 1 per card payment if to a foreign companies, current account, visa debit card.

I am regularly paying small amounts (internet fees, ebay items, books, cds, dvds...) and to pay 1 on top of each transaction is just too painfull.

I cannot see how they can justify this as there are no extra costs involved (all processed automatically by computers).

What about other banks are all doing it now? I am considering leaving Lloyds as I haven't been happy for a while and this is the last drop.

Any recomendations?

Thanks a

Halifax have been charging £1.50 on foreign debit card transactions for some time now.

I normally just use a credit card in these circumstances.

Wayne.

NatWest have done it for years, if you use Maestro.

I think it's free with Nationwide, and you don't have to pay the 2.75% commision that most banks hide in their exchange rates.

Is it for business or just pleasure?

If you have a lot of cash in your account go and tell them you'll move account if they don't drop the fees.

Nationwide. No fee and no exchange rate markup.

Ok, if I understand this correctly what LloydsTSB are doing is charging for payments to foreign companies - so if I were to pay amazon or ebay fees or pay for something with paypal (maybe not good example - maybe someone like Microsoft who charge VAT at the rate in Ireland as that is where they ship from) in sterling with a debit card they would charge 1 as the company isn't a uk company.... how in gods name are you supposed to know if the company you are paying in sterling is going to get you clobbered with a 1 charge.

You don't; they do because the transaction comes via Visa or Mastercard International who handle international payment system.

I moved my current account to Nationwide because of their policy on overseas transactions. I also buy lots of small items on the net - downloadable software and suchlike. When I was with my previous bank I would make a note of the transaction in my budgeting software. I applied an exchange rate of 1.80 US Dollar to Sterling. When I got my bank statements, I always did badly and had to go back in to increase the sterling equivalent. Since I have been with Nationwide it is so noticable that foreign transactions are costing me less - I now go back in to my budgeting software and have to reduce the sterling amount.

Well worth opening a Nationwide account. The same policy applies to their credit card too - although in this case if you withdraw cash from an ATM abroad I believe you pay a cash withdrwal surchage, like you would in the UK - but still no extra loading.

Could you provide some examples of offending suppliers/payment processor who process transactions in such away that they triggor LloydsTSB charges.
