Nationwide CC

Having taken advantage of Nationwide's 6 month 0% interest offer on their credit card, no doubt like most people, when the 0% offer expired i phoned and asked to be changed to the cashback card. They said they had to cancel the old one and re-issue a new one, didn't take very long.

I have just received my first statement on the cashback card and i am astonished to see that my cashback is being calculated at 1%, not 0.5%.

How excellent is that, two bites at the cherry. Surprised no one has mentioned this before.

From N'wide Cash Reward Card info: "Our Cash Reward Card pays you 1% money back on all your purchases in the first six months (0.5% after that)."

Amex Blue offers 2% first and 1% after, but it's taken at fewer outlets than Visa.

One reason why I've just taken a Nationwide card out - it arrived whilst I was on holiday in Venice. Just got my Morgan Stanley bill and have been hit by a forex charge of 19.86 for paying my hotel bill on the MSDW card. Rang them up and gave them an ear full and then cancelled the card. Bastards.

Just curious, is that figure of £19.86 your estimate of what the forex charge was, or was the amount identified separately on you bill?

On all the cards I've used, the forex charge is built into the exchange rate, so you don't notice it unless you look more deeply into the exchange rates used.

On the MSDW it actually tells you the amount of forex commission so it sits there like a sore thumb shouting 'we've screwed you' in your face.

I think soon all companies will have to list charges separately and not hide in exchange rates etc.

How on earth can they do that?

I though that there was a recent change in the rules that they had to do this.

My last CC statement had a new summary sheet. It had a section for 'foreign' transaction costs, but as I didn't have any foreign transactions last month it was blank [1]. Net month's will, do you want me to report back?

[1] It has a Ryanair flight on it for 44 quid. I'm sure that this was booked in Euro, perhaps I got caught by the conversion to Pounds scam discussed elsewhere?

I think they have to show the 'breakdown', whereas in the past they only had to show the sterling equivalent, but I dont see how it would make any difference, say, to an outfit like the PO in UK which claims to have 'no commission' but has an awful exchange rate

So you spent about 725 then?
