AmEx Blue Cashback

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this here.

AmEx sent me a later today stating that my cashback is being reduced. From October 1st this year, they'll be paying out (annually, again):

0.5% cashback if your total annual spend is 2,001

They've also decided to change various other aspects of the Blue Card service. For example, money back cannot be earned if it totals < 5 over a year. Also, the standard interest rate for balance transfers (after initial six months of having the account) changes from 9.9% to 12.9%.

So, is it time to get the American Express Platinum Credit Card? I've had my Blue card for just over three months now and have so far spent just under

4,000.

Seems to me it's time to stick two fingers up to Amex and get someone else's card?

So what, exactly, is the problem here. For your 4k spend it sounds like they are going to reduce your cashback from 1% to .. erm .. 1%? Yes?? I must be dense, but that still seems like a pretty good deal. One assumes you pay the balance off each month anyway, unless you're completely addled, so the 9.8%->12.9% is a never-no-mind item.

The first 2k will now only earn a paultry 10 instead of 20 so the OP will have been "robbed" of 10.

But if your total spend is over £2,000 doesn't the whole amount qualify for the 1% rebate, or is it just the amount in excess of £2,000? Its not absolutely clear in the OP's message, but to me it looks more like the former.

Either way is someone really going to go to the aggro of changing credit card for 10 quid?

That's not what the message says. 1.0% cashback if your total annual spend is > £2,001

I enquired about closing my Amex Blue account - was told I cannot have the accrued cashback till next June and in order to get it the card needs to remain open, (but does not have to be used).

I only opened it this June as Capital One were slashing their 1% in half - now Amex Blue have done the same I'll stick with Cap One as I've been told my Cap One account is staying at 1% cashback and not everyone is affected.

If you leave the account open to get your cashback, just ensure you have spent the minimum of 500 (i think that's the amount) or they will hit you with a 15 admin fee, as per their small print.

I'm surprised that Cap One decided to keep you at 1% as they have cut me to

0.5%, and they caught me out with their unusual cash advance rolling interest rule, so I'm only keeping the account open to collect my accrued cashback, and am sticking with the 2% amex platinum for the bulk of my spending.

My Amex Platinum has 1% cashback - how did you manage 2%? Is there something that has slipped my mind?

The 2% was a 3 month introductory offer. At the time seemed ideal as I was expecting to move house and had lots of purchases lined up.

Needless to say, the move has been delayed, yet again - and now due to work commitments won't happen till Oct.

I must read the small print re the minimum spend - hopefully, I'm already over that. Thanks for pointing that out.

So, the AmEx Platinum is worth the change?

Ok, I got the same thing this morning. What it ACTUALLY says is

"Your Moneyback will be calculated on accumulated spend in two tiers within a 12 month period and credited to your account on you card anniversary date

All spend up to £2000 will earn you 0.5% Moneyback All spend over £2001 will earn you 1% Moneyback".

So yeah, you are losing 0.5% of the first £2k ... £10.

Without a hint of irony, Guttorm Christensen astounded uk.finance on 29 Aug 2004 by announcing:

It's 0.5% for all spend up to 2k, 1% for 2k to 5k, and 2% for 5k+

Depends how much you spend.

I've just had a letter from them this morning advising that the rates are now changing:

All spend up to 3k will earn 0.5% All spend from 3001 to 7500 will earn 1% All spend from 7501 will earn 2%

No money back earned if annual spend is less than 1000

Since I spend around 7500 on my Amex, this means I'm dropping from around

90 to around 60, or around 0.8% average. No point sticking with Amex really.
