AmEx: tiered or cummulative cashback?

The Blue card pays 0.5% for a spend of less than 2,000. For spend of and above 2,001 it pays 1% cashback.

Let's say that my total spend for 2004 is 3,000. Neglecting the introductory offers during my first year, on my card anniversary date, will I get paid 1% cashback for the entire 3,000 spend or 0.5% for the first

2,000 and then 1% for the last 3,000?

TIA

The latter I'm afraid, but cutting cashback seems the norm these days. My egg card gives an incredible 0.1%!

But still one of the most competitive cashback deals out there.

My Amex Platinum pays

0.5% for spend up to £3000 1% for spend from £3001 to £7500 2% for spend above £7501

Since I was bored I built a spreadsheet to analyse which is best in terms of cashback between Blue and Platinum;

Less than £2000: No difference Between £2001 and £8000: Blue Above £8000: Platinum

So if your monthly bill on average is £667 or higher you should get Platinum, otherwise stick to Blue as your are better off (or no difference) in terms of cashback.

I think interest rates might be better for Platinum, but obviously you don't really want to use the card to borrow money....
