The ones Barclays are issuing are battery powered and do not need to be plugged in to the computer
And what if you're on holiday and lose it? You're not at home them to recieve a new one. Depends how much internet banking you do, but it would be very annoying to be left without access.

And what if you're on holiday and lose your debit card?
Given what others have stated about the need for the device, would you actually need that level of functionality on holiday?
Then you are inconvenienced. Though somewhat less than losing your wallet or passport.
I use NW online banking..i aint got a card reader
You'd have a spare. Or get someone to send you some money.
No access without it. Isn't that what they're planning for everyone?

There you go then.
AIUI you wouldn't be able to set up a new payee whilst you're on holiday. What a hardship!
It would probably be even worse if you lost your card!
Two things to lose which you most certainly shouldn't keep together. It seems to me that it's much more likely to lose one of two things than one of one thing.

The OP is talking bollocks. I have a Nat West online account and a card reader is NOT needed to operate it. Indeed. I have yet to install the card reader the bank sent me. The card reader is ONLY required if you want to set up a new payee. which is sensible, as that is the way that a fraudster would attempt to syphon the money from your account.
The same could be argued wrt a swipe card reader.
Okay, I'm very confuddled now. If it doesn't plug into th ecomputer, how does it authenticate your identity to the online banking system?
My Barclays account I can't even login without the device.
Tim.
Quite so.
And I have yet to received one, and I still use NWOLB every day. As I understand it, the 'reader' simply generates a unique number for each transaction, which you then have to enter to validate the transactions. As has been said, it's only needed if you're setting up DDs etc.

It generates a code which you enter into the online system.
At first glance it looks exactly like a small pocket calculator. No audio, no
I haven't the faintest I'm afraid!

Because they can e-transfer physical objects now?
No I wouldn't be able to pay invoices either. Or move money around.

What?
Do you really need to do that on holiday?
I'm posting this message using linux, and I can assure you, I don't keep my money under the mattress.
Would it run under my Windows Mobile powered phone? Or a Blackberry or iPhone?
