Not a problem, we were all newbies once :-)

It's a scam - absolutely, 100% scam. First they offer you loads of money, then they ask you to make a payment to cover handling fees of some sort once they think they have you hooked.

1) if you didn't enter a lottery, you can't have won it 2) they only give a mobile number to "claim" from 3) they don't even have a proper email address - they use yahoo... 4) they try to hide their postal address by using a PO BOX

I would, however, be interested in seeing if I could follow this up - I live locally to the address given, and would be more than happy to pass the details to the local Trading Standards Office (my wife works in the same building as them !)

It's also fairly clear that by using a PO BOX address that they're trying to avoid being traced - going to a sorting office and asking for the full contact address will get it for you though - the police may also be interested as you're not supposed to use a PO BOX without being cleared by the police to have one (I used to have one for selling public domain disks) :-p

Would it be possible to send me the full email, including headers ?

My email address is valid as long as you remove anything in capital letters :-) (put "newsgroup" in the subject line - it'll help it get through my spam filters)

Oh yeah right! And I bet you and your wife have 1,000,000 ponds with all manner of frogs and water lilies you've been trying to get rid of for months!

Not quite, but I could get some if you thought it might put the scammer off - my dad has a pond full of the buggers atm :-p

It is - but not in the way you think. It's more subtle than that....

NO. That's the scam....

The number is *not* a mobile number, it's a 50p/min "personal number". UK mobile numbers mostly start 077/078/079, though a few start 075/076 now I think. 070 are personal numbers which are charged at a variety of rates, this one (surprise surprise) is at the max 50p rate.

If you phone it you'll likely be put in a queue, or have to fight through a "press 1 for this, press 2 for that" menu, anything to keep you on the line for as long as possible. Some even answer but play a ringing tone so you think the phone is still ringing (but are getting charged to hear a playback of a ringing tone!).

The scam is actually designed to trap "scam baiters", who perhaps have a daft mobile contract with far too many inclusive minutes and have nothing better to do, so they think they'll use up some of their inclusive minutes having some fun with the "scammers", pretending to be a potential victim, when in fact they are a *real* victim, as they'll find out when they get their phone bill!!

Think about it - if the OP *really* got this email and *really* thought it could be genuine, do you think he'd publish full details of how to claim his prize ??

This is a variation of the "missed call" scam, rather than the "419" scam. Oftel did consider forcing telcos to give a pre-call announcement on 070 numbers to prevent this sort of scam, but changed their minds due to concerns about automatic alarm systems etc...

This would at first glance seem to have been written by someone who's first language is not English. In my opinion it was written by someone who's first language is English and is trying to hide this.
