buy in kits, sell individually

I have to buy a lot of items in sets but break the sets to sell the items separately. Until now, I've created a kit for the purpose of our POs and then broke the kit to sell the individual components. This worked great until I added an additional vendor for the same products...who also offers volume discounts.

How does RMS handle the inventory value when you BUY in kits but then SELL in individual items? How does it know how much of the cost of goods to assign to each product in the kit? If this is assigned by my manual entry when creating the kit and individual components to begin with, what happens when my costs change from the initial setup. If only RMS would assign cost to a kit component based on a %, rather than/or as an option to a static $ amount, it would be so easy!

Maybe I just need to run through a bunch of dummy products and transactions to test this but I don't want to clutter up my database if I don't need to.
