Can RMS apply discounts by date?

If I understand this correctly the simple answer is NO, not out of the box anyways, you can set an item to apply a discount to start on a certain date by not by the date a particular item was received into the system. At least not out of the box. I dont know of any custom add on that could do taht off the top of my head either

My understanding is entry level, or mid-tier, POS systems will not do this automatically for you, in other words, make decisions automatically that affect the financials of the retail operation (as in, reducing the price you sell your stuff for)

With RMS, you need to 1) use one of the subdescription fields to "flag" items that have been sitting at the store for X number of days, 2) use a SQL script to populate that subdescription field with your flag, and 3) use the inventory wizard - filter option - to grab all those items and process your permanent markdown (reduce the REGULAR price of the item). Over the next couple of days I need to do something similar for a client, please re-post with your e-mail if you are interested in my contacting you with how this goes. What if you were to have different item definitions for each discount level? That way you could assign an alias to match the barcode to the right discount item, and make a script to rotate the alias on the age periods, or assign them all to a matrix and have the cashier pick the appropriate age to assign the right discount.

For instance: say you have banannas that have a 10 day shelf life and get cheaper as they get riper. Have item codes A-J with the right discounts assigned and stickers on the fruit 1-10 so the cashier or the alias knowing which sticker is assigned to what age at any given day.

I could see that working. As it is now, my “bananas” are priced with the same barcode but my pricing program that prints the labels puts a symbol in the corner. So basically it is a visual reference. I.e. \ 2 months ago, / = 1 month ago, and X = current month. I guess I could change that to the month number 1-12, and if the clerk sees anything other then say current month number they could choose the discount.

So the new question, is there a way to have RMS display the option to discount? I would want the scanned item to go into the system at full price, but say the clerk sees month number less then the current month and could hit a button to apply the secondary pricing level (the discount price 50%). Even better, after hitting the discount button, it would require the clerk to then enter or press the number that is on the tag. Like a popup window with hot keys 1-12?

That might save on customization and save money.

And yes, I would be interested in the other solution also.
