POS vs RMS and central database.

I have been asked to look into pos system for our stores. We have a central warehouse and 5 remote stores. However we are thrift store based with 2nd hand merchandise so no pre upc codes and no reorders. All items are price with barcodes in the warehouse and shipped out. MS RMS looks very attractive as does MS POS. We have a central server in the warehouse that has a full SQL 2000 server available.

Can MS POS replicate the store data to the central sql server in the warehouse like RMS does? I like the structure of RMS but many of the features just don't ably to use like layaway, reorder, stock levels, and other that go with a traditional retail environment. It seems like a waste to speed the money on RMS and HQ to only get the central management features; can you do the same central management with POS?

Thank you for your time, Gary V.

There is no HQ equivalent for MSPOS. If you are considering HQ or even Store Ops, you need to get a local partner to come in and evaluate your specific needs and situation. The nature of your business, primarily the non-repeating or unique nature of your inventory, is going to present some challenges to any POS/Inventory management solution.

Gary,

MS POS will not meet your multiple stores / central management needs. You will be able to use Microsoft RMS HQ with its capability to manage multiple stores. Some of the thing you need to know -

  1. All items are to be created in HQ first and than sent to the stores.
  2. It will be a good idea to have a seperate store for your central warehouse.
  3. You can print price tags for the items in warehouse and transfer to other stores.

My suggestion is to get a copy of the RMS software and test it out.

You should be getting a full demo for testing. it is the same as a normal software but without the license.
