Editing Item Information in a grid format

Does anyone know of clean way, have an add in, or link to Excel or Access, that allows a person to edit item data file in a spreadsheet, or grid style format?

You can kind of do it with Access, but you continually get a "The data was added to the database but the data won't be displayed in the form because it doesn't satisfy the criteria in the underlying record source", when you update the line, and then the line disappears.

Nathan,

I wouldn't recommend changing data outside of RMS, but if you're really determined;

formatting link
a free, limited is available.

Jeff,

What types of problems might you encounter changing the data outside RMS?

VALIDATION

There's a ton of data validation going on in the RMS Front end, or in add-on applications designed for RMS to keep you from breaking the system. For instance, when you create a new item, the application has to check that the Item Look Up code is not already in use AND that it is not already used as an Alias. When you open a table in Access for example, you lose that validation - Access will very happliy write whatever data you give it directly to the table.

Basically you are taking your data in your hands any time you make edits outside of the UI provided. Feel free to do it, just recognize that you are taking a risk - and ALWAYS backup before you start!

Thanks Glenn,

My only desire would be to change actual item descriptions and sub descriptions of items already in the system.

Too bad with one of the Item wizards won't allow you to do this.

Nathan,

Just create a report with the info you need to change, as long as you have the ILC, you can double click on the ILC and you can change the properties. Its similar to a grid, not quite, but close.

Maybe you could create a SQL query to do it!
