Getting answers to questions...seems impossible

Hi John, First of all RMS has 2 edition Store Operation and Store Head Quarter, the HQ is treated as server where you might have more than 10 lane of license so in your case you do not really need to buy the server you can stay with 2 lane license.

In Store Operation when you installed it by default installed 3 componenets

1. Store Administrator (Create Database, backup, restore etc)
2. Store Manager (Program to create items, customers, suppliers, tenders, discounts etc)
3. Store POS (program to perform the pos transaction)
4. MSDE Free (Database Server)

If you wanted to install the RMS on 2 different locations you need really 2 license for each location however you no need any license for store manager or administrators these program can be use without any licensing as only POS require the license to perform the sales transaction.

Microsoft has 2 sets of products. Microsoft POS and Microsoft Retail Management System. The MS POS is a simple system with certain reduced functionalities [especially around fashion Matrix, serial numebr tracking etc...]. So 1st you need to know which one will address your need.

Either of them for a 2 terminal system can run directly on a two lane POS where one acts as a server OR you can buy a seprate PC in the backroom to act as a server where you can do your reports and recieve inventory. So the choice of more hardware or less is up to you.

One of your computers can "act" as the server even if you have a peer-to-peer network with Windows XP.

Put the MSDE and database on one computer and then tell the cash registers where the database is located.

Jeff, Are you saying 2.0 won't work on XP Home? If so that is bad. Craig

Make that XP Pro and/or Vista Business. Lower versions will not work at all (Vista Basic, Home, Premium) or badly (XP Home)

How is that? I thought XP Home only allowed 5 concurrent peer-to-peer network connections while Pro allows 10.

Speaking of....

Does VISTA allow more than 10 peer-to-peer connections?

We are bumping the ceiling with 10...because we have 11 computers..one bumps another off.

The main question to me is Jeffs comment that it won't work at all in XP Home. If that is the case it's going to cause a lot of problems for me(and probably others). That alone would keep me from upgrading to 2.0 . Craig

That is concurrent connections as in looking at each other's shared files. When you are just polling an IP for data, like in a SQL connection request, there is no limit as far as I know. Just like a web server can technically run on XP Home and serve up more than 5 concurrent "connections."

I like your solution. I've tried accessing a POS that is hosting the database from another computer. It seems I cannot connect the Manager station to the POS station.

Do I have something wrong? Or, could you post how you did your solution?
