How do I do gift certificates in MS-POS? and How do I edit a transaction after the fact?

Hi,

I see gift cards but I need to implement gift certificates and attach a gift certificate number (generated elsewhere) to the transaction.

For testing I created a new type of tender call GiftCertificateRedemption and was putting in my GC code in the reference number section but I found that if I don't add the GC code in the Transaction details step (first step) then I cannot go back and change it later. If the transaction is still in progress after the Transaction details step, I cannot go back and add a transaction detail without cancelling everything and restarting a new transaction including rescanning all the items.

Then if the transaction does go thru and I forgot to add the GC code I cannot manually go in and edit the transaction to add the code later. Unless I'm not seeing where that is.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Do you have the codes at the time of the transaction, and you are just forgetting to enter them? Or, are they not generated until after the sale is finished?

If it's just a matter of remembering to enter them, you could set up a serialized item for your gift certificates (rather than using the transaction reference number). This will prompt you for the serial number, and you could add your GC code at that time.

Hi,

The codes are pregenerated from my main office and printed on the gift certificate. When I have a customer that uses one I take the code and enter it in during the transaction. My concern is that if someone forgets to add the code and it is found out later I have no way of entering that code in because apparently I cannot edit a transaction once it is complete.

How would I set up a serialized item on a tender type? Unless you are talking about making the gift certificate a type of inventory item but the probem there is that I don't sell gift certificates I only (at present) redeem them.

Thanks for your help. Are there any third party gift certificate addon things? Is there a catalog of add on items available for pos?

thanks

I didn't realize that you don't issue/sell the gift certificates. You actually could still use the serialized item though... When a customer redeems a gift certificate, ring up the serialized item and enter it at a negative price (or quantity). This will reduce the total amount due by the amount of gift certificate.

I'm not aware of any gift certificate add-ins for POS other than the built-in gift card integration with FDC.

I was thinking about that same thing, adding it as an item which then costs -500 dollars for example but I wasn't sure if it would work.I had a feeling that my earlier idea about the new tender was going to throw off the end of day figures but this might actually correct that. I haven't gotten that far yet.

When someone pays for something with a gift certificate the remaining balance is issued as a store credit, does POS do store credits? I haven't seen anything but haven't been seriously searching yet.

Sorry, POS 2.0 doesn't have specific functionality for store credits at this time. My suggestion would be to track these in the same manner as your gift certificates. POS can keep track of the "money" going in or out, but doesn't not track any individual balances.
