Offline Synchronize problem

I am having trouble after closing or creating Z and ZZ reports. I am able to create the reports and close the terminal, however, after the task is completed, The 'Synchronize Offline Database' window appears and begins the process. After a few moments I receive an error: Run-Time Error '-2147217900 (80040e14)': [DBNETLIB] [ConnectionOpen (Connect()).] SQLServer Does not exist or access denied. Then my Store Operations terminates. I do have an Offline database created on Register 1 in the store and I am able to connect to it through RMS Administrator. I am running RMS version 1.3. This problem has been occuring since installation.

You need to use an 'sa' level account to log into the offline database and I think to the main database as well. The offline sync process uses some some advanced features of SQL Server to sync the databases and requires 'sa' access. Sometimes the system is set up to log in with a SQL Server account that has reduced permissions, which is normally good practice for any application, but won't work with RMS & offline databases.

If it looks like both databases are using an sa account to connect, just create a new offline database on the register and change SO administrator to connect to the new database on the "Offline" tab. Sometimes a new DB will fix wierd sync errors...

Jim,

Make sure to use the IP address of the main db server and not just a name.

Turn off any firewalls that may be running, if that works, open a hole for SOPosUser.exe

Jim,

Let's start at the beginning.

Do you have 2 machines or 3?

One machine needs to act as the database server, where the main database is. It cannot _also_ have an offline database.

The ideal scenario is that you have a office machine that is the main database server and you have register machines. Each of these must have MSDE/SQL Server installed on them. The register machines will have their own "offline" databases on their hard drives. You create these by going into SO Admin on each register and create a new, blank database.

SO Admin | File | Connect | server name will be (local) | put in the password you entered when you installed the program | OK | Database | Create | name it "Offline" (no quotes) | next | click on the magnifying glass and double click on the DBFiles folder | select the rmsdb file | next | finish.

File | Configuration | Offline tab | (local) as the server name, sa for the user, put your password in, database name is "Offline" (no quotes), 15 for the timeout. Test it. It should test OK.

File | Connect | put the IP on the main database server machine, main database name and password

File | Configuration | main server's IP, main database name, password and test. If OK, you're good to go.

Z or blind close and it should sync.

Repeat at each register.

Thanks Jeff, I am using 2 registers and the "primary server" is located in another building. I may very well have had it configured wrong. My setup is as follows.

Primary server located in different building. Register 1 houses Offline server. Register 2 uses Register 1 for Offline serrver.

I will make your recomended changes now and see if it solves the problem. I will post my results.

OK, still having troubles.

Config is now: Register 1: Primary IP address and RMSPrimary Offline (local) and Offline

I can connect to both without troble in SO Admin.

I thought taht perhaps it may have been some level of network trouble so after I c> Thanks Jeff, I am using 2 registers and the "primary server" is located in

Jim,

The Offline database must reside on each register's local hard drive, in its own copy of MSDE. Nowhere else!

The main database and the offline database cannot reside on the same machine.

Have you followed these instructions exactly?

I am experiencing the same problem. I have tried both the Sever name and IP. I set up the offline dbase to point to the local machine. Running version 1.3 also. Both offline and Server dbase connect fine but when I do a z I get the same error. Only resolution is to delete the offline dbase settings from Administrator.

It is a store that has been synchronised with HQ. Does this affect setting up the Offline dbase ?

salinden,

I have quite a few stores running it without issues.

What exactly have you done already?

What error message, the same listed? That error sounded like either a firewall issue or using a database server name instead of the database server's IP address.

sa,

Dunno, but I would think he would continue posting if he didn't. It does work, just fine.
