Registers Question

Yes, I did the whole tutorial, but some BASICS where never explained in it. Aside: Did you know that after mentioning Z and ZZ Report thousands of times, they finally get around to telling you what the hell that is in like lesson 7 of 10??? What a joke and waste of money. They were just reading Page-for-page the help file.

----- In SO Manager/Registers

Maybe I am not understanding this right. I have been PLAYING with one computer install (besides the MSDE on the server where the database is). I set up register 1000 at my computer since it will be data entry only. I set the receipt printer as my Windows printer and that's working.

Can I set up every register number in this location on this computer and then assign corresponding register numbers to each other computer? Or do I have to set up registers at each computer when I install the program on that computer?

I am trying to make a NEW register, Register 1, that is our checkout lane. I am doing it from my office computer. But when it comes time to assign the receipt printer, it will not accept any of the formats I put in. I keep getting the message, "A Receipt format must be specified for each printer used to journal or print" I have 40 column Receipt Format selected. and Windows drivers, and Print receipts automatically.

help? I just upgraded to 1.3.

Mickie,

Yes you _can_ setup the settings for a machines from one computer, but you must install the program on each, its not necessary to install MSDE on non register machines. Then the printers on each.

After you finish the install, restart it and then go into SO Administrator | File | Connect | make sure the server name has the IP address of the server machine (where the main database is installed on) | put the password in for the database | put the database name in | OK

Then File | Configuration | IP address of the server for the server name | password should have asterisks in it | make sure the database name is correct | Test Connection. If it tested Ok, on to the next lines, if not, double check spelling passwords database names etc.

Click on the Register tab and create a unique Register number. This number will correspond to the Register setup in manager.

Now do the same thing for the rest of the machines. Make sure to create the printers too

We like to have all register machine use numbers 1-9, the server is # 10 and all non register machine are numbered 11 to whatever. That gives you 9 register # possibilities. If you need more for this store, change the server # to 20 or 50 and the rest of the non register to higher numbers.

The reason you are receiving the message is that the printer is not installed on the register you are attempting to setup.

For ease of use, we suggest you point all machine to look for its report files, PO template, labels, etc on the server machine. Then when you update or create a new custom report or label, you copy it into the server machine's shared folder instead of every machine. The only exception is for the register's receipt templates, those need to be at each _register_ machine.

To change this, create a shared folder on the server's \Program Files\Microsoft Retail Management System folder, allow users to change. Then on each machine map a drive letter to that shared folder.

While still in SO Administrator | File | Configuration | Paths tab | click on the magnifying glass on each line _except_ the Receipts and the Add-ins leave those the way they are. On the others, click on the magnifying glass and find the mapped drive letter you created earlier and then down to the folder name named the same as the line name is.

Do the same to _all_ lines in the templates folder.
