Router Issues...I think!

I have my router set up in the back office which handles 4 networked computers (All Wired)...I also have my modem comming into the back office. I was having a problem with internet connection getting lost once every other week, called ISP and they told me it must be the router, modem was working fine on there end. Called the router company, they had me download new firmware. Since I have done that, I don't have an internet problem, instead once a day my registers go offline...always around the same time? Called the router co. back, and they said it was probably time for a new router??? Anyone have this type of issue before? I did everything as far as shutting everything down, re-booting, making sure nothing was connected, but still same issue?

I have had a similar issue and it turned out to be a switch that sat behind my router.

Have you reviewed the WAN and LAN, and IP router settings etc.. Depending on the firmware package install type, you may have to re-set the customized settings you had previously programmed. Some firmware install packages re-apply the customized settings after upgrading, and some do not. Worth a look.

Hi Vince,

Is this cable internet access? If cable, I would go back to them first since this is happening at the same time every day. I have run into issues where the cable company issues a group of IP addresses but the client's internal admin misstypes and the address they are using is one that was assigned to another cable customer. Make sense? So when the other client comes online, then the duplicate IP address gets bumped off the network. Of course, you'll have to get to a higher level of tech support with these types of issues.

Vince,

Always make sure that the router and the modem are on a battery backup!!

Check to make sure that a neon or fluorescent sign or other large electrical power user is being turned on at the time you are losing connection. With a battery, if it is a loss of power, the battery will fix it.
