You do not need to remove MSDE the software wizard will take you through the steps to upgrade the SQL instance. FYI it upgrades MSDE to SQL Server Express

The install package will remove old versions for you. Two things to note:

1. Copy any customized reports, receipts or HTML files to another folder before install, so they do not get overwritten, then copy them back after install.
2. After upgrade is complete, run Store Op Admin and use the Database | Upgrade option to convert your 1.3 database to 2.0

I just did the upgrade last week and was very happy with how smooth it went.

Marc- I am running 4 cpus on a network- do I have to shut out of RMS on all machines to do the update?

Thanks- Did you shut down all RMS on All your machines at install, or could you run it on the Network and install each CPU seperately?

Yes. During the DB Upgrade the database server is going to be unavailable. After the upgrade, previous versions will no longer be compatible until they are also upgraded. It's sort of a moot point - once you upgrade a register it is going to be unusable until the DB is upgraded; once you upgrade the DB it is going to be unusable by other versions. So once you start upgrading, you ARE going to be down until you finish...

One last thing, if you have offline databases for your register machines, you will have to use SOA to upgrade them to version 2.0 too.
