IE7 / MS Updates

I can't explain this so I thought I would pass it on to everyone.

I disabled my Windows Update from Automatic to manual when the warnings about installing IE7 came out a few weeks ago. This past weekend I manually checked for Windows updates and saw that they wanted me to install IE7. I selected that I did not want to install IE7 and installed the rest of the updates.

This morning my computer told me there were updates. Lo and behold, the windows setting for updates had mysteriously been changed to Automatic. I swear that I did not change that back to automatic. So I am either having a severe senior moment or Microsoft is messing with my settings behind my back. Either is possible. ;-)

So if you don't want to install IE7, do a manual check for updates and specify to hide the IE7 update to be safe. At least this way you won't accidently install IE7.

I take it that you do not use 2004 or below?

Have it on my workstation just in case a client needs help. It appears to work, can't be bothered wasting my time testing every feature on such an outdated version.

As an accountant I would like to see every client upgrade to 2007. The new accountants copy feature is awesome.

Really? I guess I should pull my disk out and install it to see. I'm still working with 2005 & 2006.

Because of increased security features, it is to everyone's benefit that IE7 replace prior versions.

It is almost trivial to backup to IE6 if, for some reason, you try to blame a malfunction on IE7.

Do you feel there is a need to upgrad to IE7 for non-IE6 users? I rarely use IE6 these days.

I use IE for manual MS windows updates and a few other sites. Maybe fire it up 1-2 times per week.

Well, yeah. It will be part of Vista. That is no more IEx, IE will be completely borged into the OS.

You think there's moaning about QB2006, you should hear the fuss about IE7 over at microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general! Favorite web sites don't display properly, buttons in the wrong place, can't customize the interface to satisfaction, "things" no longer work, slower than frozen turkey droppings, etc. Plus, ANY change brings out the "Microsoft Derangement Syndrome" folks. It's like putting a stick in an ant bed.

As an aside, it's also well known that the use of alternate browsers causes your cat to develop warts.

If you don't have a cat, you should be okay.

Love your new verb.

I'm not surprised. I am reading in a few places where IE7 broke their webmail centers as well as some folks ability to do MS updates.

good. I don't have a cat but I do use an alternative browser.
