Install QB 2005 on Win XP Network - Problem Solved

While attempting to install QB 2005 on a single computer that is on a network, I ran into numerous problems with Net Framwork, failure of QB to start up. Spent 8+ hours on the phone with Tech Support, who finally came to the conclusion I needed to install in Safe Mode (an impossibility.)

After a bit of sluthing on my own, I discovered the following solution to the problem.

  1. Start --> Run
  2. Type Msconfig -- Remember your settings before doing step two.
  3. Select to run a diagnostic Startup and reboot. This effectively disables the network, which is what Intuit doesn't want you to do and apparently doesn't bother to tell their tech support about.
  4. Then install QB2005. Should do so without incident.
  5. After installation, reverse the Msconfig instructions in 1 - 3 above. Replace the diagnositic setup with the settings you recorded in step two.

This install works for a stand alone accounting system on a single computer that just happens to be on a network. Why Intuit wouldn't tell me how to install it, and led me to believe that the errors meant it just didn't work with my computer, is well beyond me.

Regards all.

"Safe mode is the Windows diagnostics mode. When you start the computer in Safe mode, only the specific components that are needed to run the operating system are loaded. Safe mode does not allow some functions, such as connecting to the Internet. It also loads a standard video driver at a low resolution; therefore, your programs and the Windows desktop may look different from usual"

Hmmm Intuit techs told you to install in Safe mode --- which is the Windows diagnostic mode.

You used Msconfig to restart in .... what did you say again? Oh yeah. 'Diagnostic Startup' , which "disables the network, which is what Intuit doesn't want you to do and apparently doesn't bother to tell their tech support about"

Hey, I'm the first to complain about Intuit tech support. In this case, tho, it appears you just used a different method to do what the support folks told you to.... install the product in safe mode.

"Safe mode" alone is probably insufficient. It must be "Safe mode without network support."

Although I don't think that's the answer either. QB doesn't (or shouldn't) care whether the target machine is on a network.
