Next Year

I began using QB in 2005, using QB2005 pro. Apparently QB2005 Pro included a full year of payroll support and periodic updates.

Now for 2006, it appears that I can merely renew the payroll support for the full year. But could I instead update by buying QB 2006 Pro and get the full year of payroll support for 2006? The cost difference seems rather small. Are there any other factors to consider?

Yes, you can do that.

But beware of the fact that you only get ONE free tax table.

According to a post by an Intuit rep on the Intuit forums, if you get your free tax table for QB 2006 now -- which are still

2005 year tax tables -- your payroll calculations will stop functioning early next year. You must wait to sign up for payroll and get your free tax table AFTER the 2006 tables become available in order for calculation to last through early 2007. You can check for that here:

rep expected the 2006 tables to be released aroundmid-December.

And, as usual, it is rather tricky during the payroll signup process to get the one-time tax table. You have to go through the whole registration and when you get to the payment step you just leave the credit card info blank. I couldn't find anywhere in the process where it indicated that was how to get the free tax table. I had to search the Intuit forums to find out (and luckily happened across the post about the 2005 tax table issue).

For people using the Free tax tables only, I think it makes sense to defer uprgrading until February (or later). That way you get your prior year tax filings done with a stable version and when you do upgrade you get a more up-to-date free tax table.

PT,

I previously upgraded yearly, and found that the software was typically buggy with disgruntled users for the first 2 - 3 months out. I have been quite happy running QB 2003 since they shook out the bugs by March 2003.

QB 2006 appears to be a bigger revision than most, and the users forums are replete with complaints.

Look at quickbooksusers.com.

Here is one comment dated 11-21-05.

"I have a few clients calling and getting refunds, I can't repeat even half of what they are saying at this point. The amount of time and money lost in the upgrade for them has been horrible, and some of these clients are not the typical end-user, meaning, then know what they are doing in terms of computers and networks. "

I am due to upgrade this year by April 2006 myself. If the bugs persist, or if Terminal Services is not supported by QB2006, I'll either upgrade to QB

2005 or Great Plains.

Cheers,
