QB2006 - Premier or Enterprise

Our firm is an electrical contracting company, using QB2003 Premier Contractor with DIY payroll. There are 3 'active' users and two owners who want to be able to look at the data and maybe print work order sheets from proposals (we have a template that removes the pricing columns and the totals).

It is time to upgrade, the sun is setting.

On the plus side, various consumer sites report QB2006 as a really good upgraded version.

Question: What are the advantages to the Enterprise edition over the Premier Contracting editions (if any).

I see the Intuit support options, and a promise of faster, cleaner db operations - but we are not experiencing any real slowdown in performance after 4 years of data, and have never had the need to call support, so those are not issues for us.

I believe in buying the 'best fit' for my operations.. should I stick with Premier, or am I missing something in the Enterprise edition?

Enterprise has long been faster, especially with larger files. It also can have 5, 10 or 15 users at once. The specific extra features may or not be important to you. The details about these are on the quickbooks.intuit.com website. The extra cost is not too significant, especially if you normally get the support contract already bundled with Enterprise and buy it at a discount. My Lowest QuickBooks Prices are the lowest for direct-from-Intuit Enterprise since I rebate the 6% commission Intuit pays me. I quickly decided in beta tests what PC Magazine said about QB 2006: it is a must upgrade. This also apples to Enterprise.

Some QB2006 and Enterprise 6 users are now having problems with large files. I believe these may begin at 32m, thought Enterprise handles up to 2g files and normally runs fast in my 80m test file. However, I cannot use the Multiple Reports feature and others cannot save invoices in a reasonable time. Paul snipped-for-privacy@Intuit.com heads a team of engineers helping all who report such problems. Partial solutions include memory of up to 1g and installing an extra free copy of QB on a dedicated server in "Host Mode." I also know a solution for Novell servers. Here is other Speed Up QuickBooks data:

snipped-for-privacy@.Intuit recently copied the content for this from my website with my enthusiastic consent.I expect a more complete solution and probable program upgrade next week. Until you know this works I would not rush to convert large files to QB2006 or QB Enterprise 6.

We have only 5, and so far, speed has not been an issue with us

Well, actually, no. The compare products only showed me 3 differences, speed, number of users, and bundled service.

I was really hoping someone here could tell me what other differences there might be.

I went to your website, and clicked on the link for Lowest Prices. Unfortunately I saw no prices there, and no links other than to add-ons. Am I missing something? I have purchased through you in the past, and was extremely satisfied.

Hopefully my files are not too large. In any case *I* am not the one who is rushing, Intuit has set a date for me to 'upgrade' or lose payroll capability.

You are right about the QB site no longer letting you enter your version of QB and get a comparison with current versions. I think that is a big mistake and will try to get it changed. You can email me for the What's New summaries for each year. You also can avoid buying a copy of QB for users only needing read only access.
