Unable to install QB 2003 on new Dell laptop

A client purchased a new Dell laptop (WinXP Home), which came with QB

2005 Simple start already installed. I tried installing QB Pro 2003, and it goes through the installation process ok, and then states that it must restart the system, to which I respond ok, and then the only thing left on the screen is a small dialog box stating "Completing installation". The hard drive light flickers a bit and then less and less untill not at all, and the system never reboots, just hangs(even overnight). So I manually shut it down and run QB 2003 and it seems to work, untill I try to open the company file, because it needs to upgrade QB first the the same lvl as the other networked computers, as expected. But when I open the upgrade window, it is blank and giving script errors. Also the QB browser does not work, blank also, and script errors on page. The laptop has a good strong wireless network connection, and IE is working flawlessly.

Anyway, I thought maybe the problem was with the fact that it came with

2005 simple start. So first I used system restore to put it back to original, then I uninstaled the 2005 simple start and then deleted the "Intuit" folder completely, as well as removing any Registry entries pertaining to "intuit" or "Quickbooks". And still had the same result as above.

Any help would be appreciated.

What type of network does the client have the data located on?

The data is located on a Win XP Pro machine with 2 other XP Pro client machines connected to it, one wired and one wireless, both work fine. I think the only protocol I Have instaled on the new machine is TCP/IP. I'm not sure about the others they may also have IPX installed, I'm not there at the moment, I'll have to check tomorrow. The old laptop that is being replaced was also able to connect to the data with no problems, it was running Windows 98.

on it, and have no problems accessing it. As I said, when I try to open the file, QB recognizes that it is a valid company file, but also realizing that it's a newer version, it wants to update the client version to the same as that of the data, and that's where the errors pop up.

try opening one of the sample company files. then see if you can upgrade with that. if that doesn't work, might be time for a call to QB support.
