Bluescreen clicking the "FILE" menu item?

Quicken Cash Manager 2008 (Canadian version) on a Windows XP SP2 PC, 3gigs RAM, nVidia video card with latest drivers...

I had just finished adding some scheduled bills, then clicked on my Chequing account. I was hoping to print some entries. At this point I clicked "File" in the menu bar at the top of the program and my PC bluescreened with a STOP

0x00000008 error in win32k.sys.

Just tossing this out there to see if anyone else has seen this.

Thx!

Searching for win32k.sys indicated that it's likely faulty RAM causing this - you might try re-seating the RAM if this continues, or trying different RAM (if you have some available).

Had another instance of this... this time clicking the "checkmark" to edit a split.

The only thing that I can say is both times this happened after entering about a dozen items and doing an import from my bank.

I've run MemTest for 12+ hours without errors and also a stress test without fault.

And it's happened yet again...

Stop 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBF8E5F91, 0xB3105868, 0x00000000) in wink32k.sys

I don't understand why, as I have not made ANY changes to my PC in months.

This looks like a memory conflict.

You might not have made any changes to your PC but there are software updates applied all the time that could cause this problem. The the Dec 11 windows update is causing problems for some users.

2 suggestions:
  1. do a system restore back to a time prior to the first occurance of this problem.
  2. Disable all unnecessary programs (spyware, A/V, firewall, etc) in the start up screen in msconfig and see if one of them is the culprit. I had a similar issue last year with another program and it turned out that the latest update to Spysweeper was to blame.
