Quicken Premier Menu Bar under 64-bit Windows Professional

Quicken Premier under 64-bit Windows Professional.

I just installed the latest update to Quicken. One result is that the menu bar stopped working. Nothing happens when I click on anything there.

Anyone know what's wrong or how to fix it?

It sounds like there may be an issue with the latest update to Quicken causing the menu bar to stop working. Here are a few steps you can try to fix the problem:

  1. Restart your computer: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve the issue.
  2. Check for updates: Make sure that you have the latest version of Quicken and Windows updates.
  3. Run Quicken as administrator: Right-click on the Quicken icon and select "Run as administrator."
  4. Reinstall Quicken: Uninstall Quicken and then reinstall it. Make sure to back up your data file before uninstalling.
  5. Check Compatibility: If you are using the 64-bit version of Windows, make sure that Quicken is compatible with it.
  6. Check the Quicken Community: Visit the Quicken Community page and search for this issue, you may find some answers from other users.

Please note that these are general steps and may not work for everyone, however, these are the most common steps to troubleshoot the issue. If none of these steps work, you may want to contact Quicken's customer service for further assistance.

Yes, I think so. I was hoping that someone here knew for sure.

Thanks for trying to help, but...

The first thing I tried was restarting Quicken

The second thing I tried was rebooting Windows

Yes, I do, as I said in the original message

I had tried that too.

Too much trouble, and I doubt very much that that would help.

I've been using the 64-bit version of Windows since it was first released. Yes Quicken is compatible with it.

I had tried that too. I found no answers there.

I assume you mean R47.7. It's a good idea to always specify the exact release number - "latest" or "current" are not definitive.

I just installed R47.7 today; I don't see your problem. And I don't recall reading anything like that, ever; so I have no informed suggestions for getting the menu choices to function.

To test for possible file corruption contributing to the problem, you can create a New Quicken file and see whether the problem occurs there. If the test file works, that suggests problems with your regular Q file. To attempt to address that, you could try Validate, and possibly Super-Validate, on your current file. If Validate/Super-Validate using R47.7 do not fix the problem - you might try both with your previous version of Quicken installed (meaning you'd need to reinstall to your previous version, then Validate/Super-Validate, then try upgrading again. See below.

I notice you rejected the earlier suggestion to reinstall Quicken and re-apply the current release, but I believe that is your best bet (if your current file is not corrupted). It's not a guarantee, but it has been known to correct some problems in the past - particularly when the most recent release was automatically installed by Quicken.

When you do the reinstall of Quicken, you should make certain that Quicken can not automatically upgrade to the most recent release. If UAC won't do the trick, physically disconnect your pc from the internet for the reinstall.

If you do not already save the install file for each release, you can download whatever is the most current release from Quicken at:

If a reinstall and re-update to R47.7 don't correct the problem, you may want to revert to a previous release. You can download virtually all release patch files here:

To revert, you would need to uninstall Quicken (again); then reinstall Quicken (blocking Quicken from automatically applying the most current release, again); then with Quicken closed, run the downloaded patch file for the release you want to be on.

Yes, I think so, but...

...Yes, I agree. But since I couldn't get to Help/About on the menu bar, I wasn't sure. Is there some other way to check?

I was afraid you would say something like that.

How can I do that without access to the menu bar?

Same question: How can I do that without access to the menu bar?

How can I reinstall Quicken?

I just went there, downloaded the US Manual Mondo Patch Update QW27.1.47.7MPatch.exe and ran it. That didn't fix the problem.

Strangely, while the file was downloading, Windows said it was downloading QW27.1.47.7.exe, but the downloaded file is called QW27.1.47.7MPatch.exe.

I also have the downloaded QW27.1.46.12MPatch.exe (1/15/23) file saved. If I want to revert to that release, how do I do it? I can't simply run that file, can I? Do I have to uninstall Quicken, then reinstall it first? I know how to uninstall it, but where can I find the installation file. Is that "patch" file for more than patching? Can I also install from it?

If I can do that, should I first try uninstalling, then install QW27.1.47.7MPatch.exe?

And one final question: is there any potential issue with my losing my license if I uninstall, then reinstall? Is my license information kept somewhere on my computer? Where? Or do I have to first find it myself, make a note of it, and then reenter it somewhere after installation? Where can I find it? Where would I have to reenter it?

Try starting Quicken with no file open: hold down CTRL while double-clicking the Quicken icon. That normally shows only the File and Help menu choices. Possibly without a file open, those two menu choices will be functional.

Then try the second part of my sentence ... that is:

If you do not already have the appropriate patch file(s), download it/them from

formatting link
[I save all patch files in a folder I named Quicken-Patches]

In Control Panel, select "Programs and Features". Select Quicken and either: click Uninstall in the header row, or right-click the selection and choose Uninstall.

Presumably you have your Quicken installation file; run that, preventing Quicken from accessing the internet.

When Quicken has been reinstalled but is not running, run the appropriate downloaded patch file.

[Note: you can Validate/Super-Validate from ANY Quicken file; Validate/Super-Validate does not have to be initiated in the file suspected of having corruption.]

You should uninstall Quicken, reinstall Quicken, THEN run the patch file.

Quicken used to have two versions of patches: regular and Mondo. Now all patches are Mondo patches; the suffix "M" stands for Mondo.

No.

No.

See my most recent previous post from a few minutes ago.

No.

Not to my knowledge.

I don't think you need to worry about any of that. Your Quicken account information should be stored on Quicken's computer. If/when Quicken needs it, it will access it on its own.

Strangely, I just got a popup from Quicken asking me to install 47.7. I did. The problem remained.

Regarding the license information I just asked about, I assume that's the User-ID and password I have for Quicken. Is that correct? Do I have to enter it somewhere if I uninstall and reinstall Quicken? Where do I enter it? If it's somewhere on the menu bar, I'm worried about trying to do this.

I should have said this earlier: When you want to upgrade to a newer release, you can just run the appropriate patch file. When you want to revert to an older release, you should uninstall Q, reinstall Q, THEN run the appropriate patch file.

Simply running the patch file for the current release, when Quicken is already at the current release, will not accomplish anything: you must uninstall/reinstall first.

I don't recall.

I don't recall.

If Quicken wants you to enter your Quicken ID and password, Quicken will ask for them.

I tried that three ways:

  1. I used Search Everything to look for qw.exe. I found it, then held down CTRL while double-clicking the Quicken icon. Quicken opened normally with the same problem.

  1. I went to C:\Program Files (x86)\Quicken and then held down CTRL while double-clicking qw.exe. It gave me Properties for qw.exe.

  2. I went to C:\Program Files (x86)\Quicken and then right-clicked and chose Open while holding down the Ctrl key. This way it opened with only the File and Help menu choices. Neither worked.

So it seems clear that the problem is with Quicken, not the data file.

Yes, thanks. I know how to uninstall a program.

I have the 2018 Quicken Deluxe (not Premier) Installation CD. I think everything since then has been updates.

See above. It now seems clear that the problem is not with the data file.

OK. Can I use my 2018 Quicken Deluxe CD?

Thanks. Good to know. But how does Quicken know who I am and therefore where to find it? Is it from my user-ID and Password. Where do I enter that? I hope it's not from someplace on the menu bar.

If my 2018 Quicken Deluxe CD is not appropriate for that, can I download an installation file somewhere?

Reply to

OK. So I guess my only remaining question is what do I need to install from: My 2018 Deluxe CD (I'm now running Premier) or something else that I may not have?

I went to

and saw the instructions for downloading and activating. Everything looked clear and easy until I got to the end and it said I needed to enter the Activation code that I got from Amazon, where I think I bought it. I don't remember ever having an activation code, but perhaps I just forgot and never saved it.

If I upgraded from Deluxe to Premier through Quicken, not Amazon, do I still need an activation code? If I need it, how can I get it? Can I call Quicken and get it from them? Or call Amazon and get it from them.

Reply to

OK, I just downloaded it. The next step is clicking the downloaded file.

I haven't done that yet, primarily because of my concern about the activation code it may ask me for. But I did notice on these instructions that when I do, it gives me two choices:

. Uninstall your Previous version of Quicken

. Install & Update Quicken We'll install latest version of Quicken on your computer and check to make sure you have the latest updates and enhancements.

So assuming that I can somehow get the activation code from either Quicken or Amazon, I assume that I should check both boxes and do both. Right?

Also I just went to Amazon.com and verified that on July 19, 2018 I bought Quicken Deluxe 2018 - 27-Month Personal Finance & Budgeting Software [PC/Mac Download] there. So that expired in September 2020, and I must have since renewed it with Quicken itself. Since the renewal was with Quicken, am I correct that that means I don't need the Amazon activation code? If so I can go ahead with the uninstallation and reinstallation.

I just tried calling Quicken to ask whether I need the activation code, and if I do they could give it to me, but they're closed on Saturday. Unless you can tell me I definitely don't need it, I'll put off doing anything until I call them on Monday.

If your current installation is unusable, what will you gain by waiting until Monday?

In an effort to try to condense multiple posts, I'll try to cover what I can here without necessarily quoting previous material.

First: I'm not at all convinced that your problem is a Quicken problem. Nothing you've done so far would prove that - and, as of half an hour ago, I still can't find anyone else reporting your problem.

Second: my apologies. I totally forgot that at least some Quicken menu items can be accessed via Quicken shortcuts. The shortcut for the File menu is ALT-f; Edit menu is ALT+e; View menu is ALT+v; Quicken Help is ALT+h (or F1)

If the shortcut keys work for you, some of what we have already discussed (such as creating a new file; and Validating) should be doable.

Also, if I were you, I would try going to Help > Report a Problem and sending a problem report, and a sanitized Quicken file, to Quicken. If your issue should turn out to be a Quicken problem, your file may help Quicken, Inc fix it. Don't expect any response.

-----------------------------------------

I have never done an upgrade "in place" to a higher Quicken Edition (such as Deluxe to Premier) before, so I can't say how that would be handled, if you reinstall. The rare occasion when I upgraded to a higher Edition, I just bought the new Edition and installed it from scratch: I wanted to be able to easily re-install from my PC, if that became necessary.

[I do recall that when I renew my subscription (usually with Amazon), I get a CD. When I run the CD, it seems to work like an activation code (though I have forgotten the details).]

I rarely go to my Quicken account, so I am not well versed about what can be done there. But I just checked out how to get there; you should be able to do the same.

Go to:

formatting link
Click "Sign in" (upper-right next to the red "Buy Quicken" button) Click the resulting "Sign in" button under My Account Enter your Quicken credentials, then the Sign in button Make the appropriate choice.

One of the choices is "Access your apps", which appears to contain a downloadable Quicken installation file. Since I always save my installation files on my PC, I'm not familiar with exactly what's there, but it may well be the install file you need. [I just did a partial test (downloaded the .exe and ran it), but stopped when the install process wanted to uninstall my current version.]

I just called Amazon and spoke with someone who told me where to find the activation code on their web site.

No time right now, but I'll uninstall and reinstall a little later.
