BULLETIN: Sharx35 is now on Quicken 2011

Yes, tis true! For the first time in years, Quicken H and B went on sale in my part of western Canada. Regularly $109.95 CDN, it is on this week for $49.99 on London Drugs, in store or on line.

It installed with NO problems whatsoever. However it looks a helluva lot different from my old Quicken 2002. It will take some getting used to. However, the numbers balance. However, several of the stocks in my Canadian stock portfolio which trade on the NYSE downloaded their quotes in US dollars, naturally. I then have to go to my broker's web site to get the current market value at close of trading and calc the market value in CDN dollars per share manually. Only 4 stocks in this category so it is much faster than having to manually add ALL of them which I had to do since my on-line downloading privileges ended several years ago.

Is there anything else that a person going straight from 2002 to 2011 should watch for?

Considering your reputation in "flaming" posters in this NG. Don't hold your breath waiting for any assistance.

I can't believe that you actually dug the lint out of your pockets and spend some money. But what I really find hard to believe is your nerve to ask for assistance.

I agree with Richard. What a narcissistic (&(&%%$^$$#$ to think we'd even care you finally dropped a few pennies on Quicken 2011. I suppose it'll be another decade or so before you do it again. Sharx35, if you want to participate in this group, you should have started long ago rather than flaming everybody. Or at least begin with a sincere apology.

Well, I guess I had it coming. We are almost in a New Year. Maybe it's time for me to say, frankly, that it really doesn't matter if I understand your reasons for doing something relating to Quicken or NOT doing something relating to Quicken. Obviously it matters to you, otherwise you wouldn't spend the time raising the issue in this forum. So, ALRIGHT ALREADY, I admit that I have been somewhat fractious and even undiplomatic. No harm in "giving it a go" as they say. Let's see what happens. NONE of us knows everything there is to know about Intuit, Quicken, on-line banking, or finances, in general. ALL of us can learn something from this forum. Over and out...

Sharx35,

If the above was meant to be an apology, in my book, it falls woefully short. In addition to "fractious" (great word by the way, not commonly used. You must be a Bill O'Reilly fan) and "undiplomatic", you can also add "rude", condescending" and outright "nasty".

If you're really interested in getting in the "good graces" of this newsgroup, I'd like to recommend that you post a "meaningful and sincere" apology to the other posters that you have flamed over the past year or two, especially Mr. Jan. For reasons, I can't fathom you were especially cruel to him on post after post.

Now to the question asked in your initial post, I upgrade every three years, in order to maintain download and TurboTax interface capabilities, and have NEVER encountered any conversion problems. As you indicate, the interface has changed substantially over the nine years since your last upgrade, so I agree that it may take some adjustment on your part. In terms of future pitfalls, nothing comes to mind. I'm sure after nine years, you find many new capabilities and probably "zero" loss of functionality.

Since I live in the U.S., I don't have the currency issue that you brought up. You may try to use the multiple currency capability (see help for details). It may eliminate your need to do manual conversion on your U.S. investments. Maybe some of your fellow Canadians or British users will response with their experiences since multiple currencies are more common for many of them.

Here's hoping that 2011 will be a great year for you and your finally learn to "play nice with others".

Message received. In my experience the best kind of apology is in the form of subsequent **actions** which represent a change from the past. As they say, "talk is cheap, but actions speak loudly".

Frankly, I don't expect an automated fix to my currency problem as most of the stocks in the account are denominated in Canadian dollars. It makes sense to leave that account set up as a CDN $ account as the great majority of stocks in it are CDN. The practical fix, which I have arrived at, is simply do a manual conversion of the $US market values of the 4 or 5 US dollar stock prices involved, after the "end of the trading day" values appear on my broker's web site, I.e. the broker does supply the TOTAL value of the particular stock at the end of the trading day in CDN $, but only supplies the UNIT price in $US. Go figure. Then, with the Quicken downloaded US $ UNIT PRICE, it's just simple arithmetic to calculate the closing UNIT price in CDN dollars and to insert that value in the data file. Then, I have a valid Net Worth calculation accurate to within a few cents. Most of the time, since 95% of my holdings aren't affected, I get a reasonably close Net Worth value by doing a simply Quick Update, without dicking around with the manual calculations.

Thanks for your comments, suggestions, and sentiments.

Please excuse my interruption, however this looked to be a perfect place to jump in & ask:

I, too, use the same tactic. This year, though, when I loaded TT2010 & told it to grab info from TT2009..... nothing. Can not find the .tax data file. TT2009 is still in my computer, as is 08, 07, etc. Have you ever heard of TT perhaps archiving the data file & changing it's name? I have manually searched to no avail, including all my back-ups from last FY. Bing'd, google'd, yahoo'd and.... nothing. So I am hoping you professionals can save me re-entering all that tedious info, such as my name & address. Thanks.

Rich

FWIW ~ I have lurked here for years & found many an answer and/or work-around. Thank ya'll.

The problem is that since your prior behavior managed to PO lots of people I seriously doubt anyone will be listening to you without a sincere apology.

It's the season to live and let live. Forget it. As I posted before, I never believed he was actually serious in his posts. No one could be that much of an ass, and I still maintain he (or she) was jerking us around.

Please do not "hijack" other threads. You issue has no relationship to this thread's conversation.

Having said that, I have responded to you under a new topic, "CAN'T FIND

Lee, most people are capable of change. Of course, how permanent those changes are is always open to speculation, isn't it?

You are very perceptive, Andrew. However, that doesn't excuse my being a prick. Judgmental is more accurate a description. I tend to assume that my solutions to problems should fit everyone, e.g. arranging my bills so they are pretty well paid automatically without any manual "dicking around", aside from verifying the monthly invoice. Some people like to go through the process of manually writing out a check, addressing an envelope, affixing postage, then schlepping it to the post office. Hey, it is THEIR RIGHT to, in my opinion, to waste THEIR TIME. But, key to this is that is is THEIR time and THEIR business if they waste it. God knows that I waste dozens of hours a month on the Internet, however I enjoy wasting that time so...I have to grant that right to others, eh?

As you and others have said, time will tell as to whether, or not, your new-found attitude will last.

I've been lurking for quite a while too and have become familiar with a few of the names here.

Well, you know how sometimes people forget to log off and 'friends' make goofy posts under that persons name? Maybe that's what happened to Sharx35? ;-)
