Can't Backup Q2005 after installaing Windows Installer 3.1

May 24, 2005 3 Replies

Several weeks ago I did an update of XP Pro SP2 with the latest version of Windows Installer. Since that time, I have not been able to back up Quicken (Ctrl B). When I start the backup, Windows Installer starts to run and it interferes with the Quicken backup process. After clicking on "Cancel" a couple of times, I can back out of the process. I plan to do some tests to see if I can nail down the exact problem.

I think one of the "fixes" for this problem is to quit out of Quicken, leaving the Installer window and then to re-insert the Quicken Install CD.

There might have been a few other ways to fix this, I seem to recall. You might do well to Google this group as well as the Quicken Forum site. Limiting your search to that site may be useful. Use "site:Intuit.forums.liveworld.com" as part of your Google argument.

Thanks for the tips. I'll do the search as you suggested. When I run msconfig and do a selective startup, the backup works without invoking Windows Installer so I'm assuming some other process is also involved with this problem.

After reading the messages in that forum, I decided to uninstall and reinstall Q2005 and that worked. The windows installer no longer pops when I do a backup.

I suspect the problem may be related to the fact that Intuit uses Demoshield 7 as their installer instead of Windows Installer and there may be a conflict between the two.
