confused about historical data

Although I have used Quicken 2005 to track my investments for about a year now I have never yet downloaded historical data. I assumed I was getting all the information I needed from the regular downloads from my financial Institution, including the correct market value of stocks held (at least for the statement dates) but not yet sold in that brokerage portfolio. Just today I downloaded once "quotes, Asset classes, etc.".

Questions:

If within my Quicken Deluxe 2005, I now open an investment account and in the Summary screen select a previous date (say May 15, 2005) will the market value column for that date show correct values? That is, did the "Download Quotes, Assets, etc" that I did today just download today's data or also correct data for May 15 2005?

If not, do I need to download historical data to get the correct May 15 (or other dates) market values?

I've hesitated to download "historical data" because I heard that could greatly increase the Quicken file sizes, but perhaps I was mis-informed. Was I?

I looked in the Quicken help files, but did not find what I needed to know.

Thanks for any help.

You can easily check to see what historical data you have for each security. Select the account - summary view. Right click on a security and select 'Price History' from the drop-down list. A window pops up and shows you dates and price data.

Typically you get about one week of data [not sure exact # days] when you do a one-step-update.

Depends on what you find in examining the Price History per above. You probably will need too.

My opinion - yes you were mis-informed. The price data is stored in the '*.QPH' file in your file set. I download daily and have for quite a few years and have the data in my file for every security I own or have owned. My QPH file is about 4300 KB. The only precaution I take is to stop downloading data for a security that has been closed out.
