Credit Card # change

My CC company has changed my CC #. On the most recent download, Q2011 added a new account with the new number. I would prefer to used the old account because of the history etc. Could I just edit the old account and change the CC # and have the D/L's continue to the old account.? How would I direct the next download to the old account.

Try merging the two accounts into one account. That is an option.

I have several times made a notation in the form of a zero$ transaction stating the credit card number was changed on that and that date from xxx to yyy. Then change the number in the accountdetails and be done with it.

Hi, Bill.

Han has the right idea.

My advice is to do nothing - or practically nothing. Just watch for a month or two until the dust settles, then make whatever changes you need to make in your own Quicken Account setup. But let the bank handle the mess on their end; it was their fault that their system got hacked.

When my bank replaced my credit card recently (for undisclosed problems at their end), it made no difference in my Quicken accounts. Oh, I did update the account number in my Quicken, as Han suggested, but I did not bother to cancel the old account and start a new one. After all, I did not initiate this change; it was the bank's doing, so I let them straighten it out, and they did. I saw a very brief flurry of transfers on my paper statements, but everything else continued as before. There was no need to even record those transfers in Quicken. That credit card account dates back to 1990 and there have been a few number changes during those decades, but it's all one continuous history in Quicken.

Even my online payment of the card, from my checking account in one bank to the credit card account at another bank, went smoothly. The old number was still in my Bill Pay setting, but payments to that number automatically got credited to the new number.

My advice to you is the same: Do nothing except change the account number in your own Quicken account. To do this, just open that credit card Register and click Account Actions | Edit Account Details. In the Comments box there, make a note to yourself of the old number and any other facts that you might need to remember. (If you are using a version other than Q2011, your version might be slightly different.)

Make sure when you reactivate that you match it to the correct account. If you don't, it will create a new account which is not what you want.

This may sound stupid, but since my new card is "in the mail" as of Aug 8 with an expected delivery of 10 to 14 days, in theory, I don't know my new card # as of yet. When I called CS about it, the first thing they wanted me to do is verify the last 4 of the new CC# by asking me if XXXX is that number. I said yes and apparently it was.!! When I tried to update Q from the old account, it is apparently locked and will not allow any downloads by now allowing any selection in the type of file I want (Q, MS money etc) Q did generate a new account and within that download, it did place the new CC# in its entirety in the appropriate box. I have not decided if that is a security hole or not. But yes, I was thinking I would have to deactivate and then reactivate and point to the correct account.
