Improve matching of downloaded transactions

I have been somewhat disappointed with Quicken's ability to match downloaded transactions with ones in the register. It seems worse than Microsoft Money. Is there something I can do differently to improve this? A couple examples:

I pay lots of bills using my bank's online site. When these clear, there is a check number associated with it. This number is unknown to me in advance when I put the entry in the register. Quicken always fails to match these.

I have my salary direct deposit auto-entered into the register as a recurring deposit. It is estimated but within a few dollars of the actual amount (which varies slightly paycheck to paycheck). When the deposit clears, the downloaded transaction is never matched up.

Money never had trouble with either of these cases. By the way I'm running Q2010 with all the updates.

Thank you...

My fi accepts online billpay instructions from Quicken. When I send the payment instruction, the "check number" is assigned to the Quicken register transaction ... so when the payment clears and downloads, the downloaded transaction matches.

So one answer would be to find an fi that accepts billpay instructions from Quicken.

Or you can manually match the two transactions.

Or you can wait to enter the Quicken transaction, until the cleared transaction downloads, so you can enter it with the check number that's in the downloaded transaction ... then Quicken should change the Status of the downloaded transaction to Match.

a.) If you manually match the downloaded transaction, Quicken should create a split register transaction, with a split line to adjust the register transaction amount to match the downloaded amount. b.) Or: Modify the register transaction to the correct amount before accepting the downloaded transaction. c.) Or: Don't have the paycheck transaction auto-entered; have it remind you to enter it. When the downloaded transaction appears with the correct amount, Enter the scheduled transaction, modifying its amount to be the same as the downloaded amount. Then the downloaded transaction status should change to Match.

Or (if you only record net pay in Quicken):

d.) Don't enter any paycheck transaction in Quicken. Memorize the paycheck transaction (with no amount), and let the downloaded transaction pick up category/memo info from the memorized transaction when you Accept it.
