No longer matching manual transactions?

Running Quicken Deluxe 2015. Not sure what changed - nothing intentional, but now when I manually enter a transaction, say a purchase at a store, then do a 1 step update a few days later when the transaction shows online, Quicken no longer 'recognizes' that it's the same transaction and creates a duplicate. So for example, I buy something at target for $19.95, enter a line in Quicken Target, $19.95, then the next day do a 1 step update, I have 2 Target transactions for $19.95, one cleared, one not.

Thanks.

Hi, Evan.

In Edit | Preferences | Register | Downloaded transactions, the top checkbox, under After Downloading Transactions, offers to "Automatically add to banking registers." Is that box checked in your Quicken?

Hi, Evan.

Depends on how YOU want Quicken to behave. I have it UNchecked. And I don't see the behavior you describe.

I enter each transaction - such as a purchase on my credit card - as soon as I can, usually when I get home from the store. Then, a few days later, a One Step Update downloads the transaction, after the card company has processed the information from the merchant. When it appears in the list of Downloaded Transactions, I click "Accept" and that transaction is Matched to the transaction I entered manually. ;Hi, Evan.

If you are automatically adding downloaded transactions to your register, you can still deal with mis-matched/un-matched downloaded transactions.

Make sure you are displaying the "Status" column (click the gear-wheel icon just above the vertical slider in the register). When displayed, the "Status" column should be the leftmost column and should have a blue orb in its heading.

Downloaded transactions that were added as New, should have a blue orb in the Status column, just like the one in the heading. Manually added transactions should have a pencil icon in the Status column.

You can click on the pencil icon of a manually entered transaction, then click "Match to a downloaded transaction".

That should display basically the same "Manual Match" list you would have seen if you had tried to match by clicking Match on the downloaded transaction when it was in the "Accept downloaded transactions" window ... except that when matching to transactions that have already been "added" to the register, the two amounts must match exactly.

Hmm... I don't think so. But something else now odd is happening. Essentially transactions aren't being marked as reconciled or cleared.

I have transactions going back to the 5th that are posted on my bank site that I manually entered, but don't show cleared or any other status. And my balance is off, so I think a transaction - or two - is missing. Is there a way to - I don't know the term - force a refresh? Have Quicken somehow go back and make sure all transactions from my bank are in Quicken?

Thanks :)

To the best of my knowledge, you can't do that without a restore from a bac kup prior to where the problem occurred.

If you don't have that many transactions, my recommendation would be to sim ply reconcile manually. Once you've done that, you should be able to stay in sync.

If you've got transactions that are there twice (your manual entry plus a d ownloaded entry), you'll need to delete one of them. If you delete the dow nloaded version, you can still get Q to think that it matched your manually entered transaction by manually filling in the information from the websit e.

If you'll right click the transaction, then hold the Ctrl key while selecti ng "Copy", you should get a pop-up. Inside that pop-up will be a checkbox & a date field at the bottom of the screen. If you "check" the box Q will think that transaction has already been matched & won't try to match to it for subsequent downloads. In addition, if you use a Posting Date that is < = your statement date, it will make reconciliation easier.

Should you find that there are missing transactions instead of duplicates, the same technique can be used on those to get Q to think they've been down loaded.
