Loading a new version of Quicken without replacing the old

Dumb question perhaps, but I have ordered an (OEM) Quicken Deluxe

2006. Am presently running Quicken 99 and wanted to see if some deificiencies have been remedied. But I am also worried about the newer version messing things up in my file. Is it possible to run both versions in parallel on the same machine while I make sure I want to moved forward?.

Hi, Kaplan.

I never heard of "an (OEM) Quicken Deluxe 2006". What exactly are you getting? And you ordered it from WHERE?

It IS possible to run two versions of Quicken on one computer, but it generally is not recommended. You CANNOT share a single data file between two versions, especially not versions as far apart as 1999 and 2006.

If you really want to do this, then just be SURE your '99 data is backed up (in the '99 format) and that your '99 program files are protected from being overwritten - or that you have media so that you can re-install '99 if things go badly. Then install 2006, pointing it to a new location. After installation, tell Q06 to Open your old .qdf file, then Save that to the new location of your choice. Run Q06 and make sure you like it. Until you decide to retire Q99, you'll need to continue to duplicate all your new transaction entries there, as well as in Q06.

Starting with Q2006, Quicken wants to uninstall other Quicken versions it finds during the installation process.

You can tell the Quicken install process to ignore other installed versions by holding down CTRL+SHIFT when clicking the first "Next" button you come to during the install dialog.

John - thanks for the answer to the OP.

I added this to the famous Quicken Wiki that Andrew D maintains - for future posterity. The goal is to be able to simply refer people to his FAQ list for these things are we see fit.

Andrew D: Maybe a new category called 'Installation' can be added to the FAQs? (Please don't send me back a slew of profanitities like the last post you made towards me - not a good way to win friends and influence people - I don't respond to those. Just a single point of information here in case you care. Last word on THIS subject as well.)
