Odd bank download behavior

Sep 11, 2008 10 Replies

My 2 banks have recently updated their security features - password, pass mark, challenge questions, so my vault no longer works.......

I open Quicken (2007), then go to the bank site, and download transactions to - format- Quicken....

Somehow, one bank thinks I haven't downloaded since 7/28, so it wants to download all transactions since then.

First I did an "accept all", and discovered that it downloaded (and I accepted) all the transactions from 7/28, making duplicate entries......

I then restored my backup from 4 days ago, and selectively picked the transactions from the new download.

There is now a red flag beside one of the accounts, saying that I have transactions to accept....

How do I clear the flag, and refuse the download?

Thanks in advance!

Grov

If I understand your situation correctly, you can not "clear the flag, and refuse the download"

In order to "clear the flag", you must process all the transactions that were downloaded: you must "Accept" them or "Delete" them. You can Accept some and Delete others; but you must process them all.

There is a problem in Quicken where the program gets confused about the downloaded transactions. It can show the transactions in the online center, but not in the account register. There is no way that I've found to accept or delete them. I've seen this two or three times. Each time has required a run of qcleanui, followed by reinstall of Quicken. There is an item on the Quicken support page about it with all of the necessary steps to repair it.

This can be caused by going back to a previous backup while there are downloaded transactions that need to be processed.

I had the same problem (with Bank of America) just when they changed on of our credit card numbers. Q2007 not only downloaded nearly a years worth of previously downloaded and reconciled data for the credit card, but for all other BofA accounts. It was a total mess. Depending on what your back does, it may be possbile to avoid the whole mess by NOT doing the Quicken "One Step (on the mine) Update", but use the bank website's Web Connect feature. That is what I do now.

And NEVER hit the "Accept All" button after you do a download. The only time I have encountered errors such as missing or duplicate transactions is when I get lazy and hit the "Accept All" button.

Laura- I respectfully disagree. If I have a half dozen transactions that I've pre-entered (say, a weekend of charges) and I see them all 'matched', I've rarely (if ever) had any problem simply accepting them all in one click. Saves a lot of time doing it individually.

Each case must be individually considered; what is good for one may not be good for another.

I'm with Laura. Call me chicken, but fixing accepted entries is more work than looking each one over individually for correctness.

As you said - YMMV

You're an experienced user, so I don't plan to try to change your ways.

But you might be surprised at how many users have found that Quicken matched one or more downloaded transactions to the wrong register transaction. If those users just noted that the downloaded transaction should match a register transaction, but did not verify which transaction it was matched to, they'd "lose" the downloaded transaction, and likely never know what happened to it. It wouldn't affect their balance, but it probably would affect reconciles (at least to a paper statement).

The only way to know whether a downloaded transaction is matched to the correct register transaction, is to select the downloaded transaction.

It's not the "Accept All" button that creates the problems; it's not making sure that the downloaded transactions have the correct status, and that the "Match" transactions are matched to the correct register transactions.

I visually verify that my Match transactions are correctly matched while accepting them individually; then I scan my New transactions and if they're all truely new, I do an Accept All. Still saves quite a few mouse clicks, and pretty much insures I don't lose any transactions.

Hi John - note I said "All of them matched" in my original. If I see ANY that are NEW, I never ACCEPT all, because I do want to enter each individually to ensure that the 'new' ones get placed correctly and I can see what I want edited. My specific 'beef' was in the OP's phrase 'never accept....'. Again, if I see a bunch of ones that all match (date and payee and amount), I do the ACCEPT ALL. Any deviation from that, nope!

Is that "Quote Fix"?

No, not a new newsreader; still Outlook Express with QuoteFix. I was doing a little experimenting; I wanted to underline a couple of words, and so I set the format to "rich text", or HTML.

I sure won't keep doing that if it is going to create problems for others.

Yes. It may not happen often, but it can happen. It's most likely to happen when you first start downloading to an account that already has manually entered transactions in it, but it can happen if you have deleted and re-entered any downloaded transactions. Quicken wants to match to the oldest, never downloaded, transaction in your register.

The only way to be certain which register transaction the downloaded transaction matches, is to "select" the downloaded transaction in the "Accept transactions into register" window. That will highlight the matching register transaction.

Right you are John!

Doesn't bother me as long as I don't get yelled at for top posting (!). (Speaking of yelling, Andrew D. has been mighty quiet lately, hasn't he? But that's another matter....hope my namesake is ok)

It might confuse the issue if sometimes one top posts with others bottom posting, so we'll see how it works out. I prefer bottom posting, but others prefer top. It's a matter of choice as long as we're consistent (At least in the same thread).
