Q11 Deluxe vs Premiere

Do you doubt, are you just curious, or do you have a specific problem in mind?

Initially just curious, but now I'm starting to doubt, at least in the context of Quicken.

I bought Quicken Deluxe 2011 at Best Buy today for $39.99, plus sales tax.

Haven't had time to install it yet.

Two programs that comes to mind are office related converters or flash.

If you don't have those installed the Quicken installation process will install it. They would be on the CD but not part of the download file.

Hadn't thought about checking Best Buy. Ours is not the easiest to get to so I tend to skip that store. We were at Walmart today and they wanted $50 for it.

Most retailers price match with a copy of the ad. I've used online print outs without issue.

OK. All installed. Took about 10 minutes. My QDF file has been converted and validated (about 160,000 entries - 50 MB - for 20 years) and is waiting for me to make my first entry. Help About says this is "Quicken 2011 Deluxe Release R 3(20.1.3.20)".

Installation was completely painless. I just broke the seal on the box, put the CD in the drive and accepted Win7's offer to run Setup.exe. Setup said it would do 3 things: Uninstall my previous Quicken (2010), Install Quicken

By this time, the Quicken 2010 icon on my Taskbar had changed to a "generic" icon. I right-clicked on it and Unpinned it from the Taskbar, then I moved the new Quicken 2011 icon from my Desktop to the Taskbar and pinned it there. When I clicked on it, Quicken opened, offering to convert my QDF file - as above. That took another couple of minutes, and then my main Checking Account register appeared. And that's where we are now. ;

Any reason to *not* uninstall the older version before installing the new?

I will be upgrading from 2008. Do I need to validate/super validate my data files before I do the install? I will make sure that I have a few backup copies saved just in case something does not go as planned.

Quicken for Windows: qcleanui.exe. Quicken for Mac: the Money Converter.

No reason that I know of. Just be sure that each version is in a clearly separate location so that they don't step on each other's toes. And DO NOT try to use the new version's QDF in the old version - not even accidentally.

John Pollard has tested such arrangements and can tell you a lot more about them than I can. I haven't run parallel versions in several years.

Only if you are super-paranoid. ;^} Q11 Setup validated my Q10 file before saving a copy and then converting it to Q11.

My philosophy for all software is pretty much the same...

Whenever a major change (not necessarily a major improvement!) is released, I prefer to uninstall the old before installing the new.

With regards to Q2011, I was wondering if you, or anyone, had any installation problems with this logic.

No problems with your logic. But ... Quicken setup checks for and uninstalls the previous version. Some of us feel better doing a manual uninstalls though. :-)

Interesting - I'll check next time I'm there... Still thinking a combo deal with TurboTax might be better in a month or so.

I believe there are occasions when there are problems in the old version data that can only be "fixed" adequately enough by a Validate using the version that last managed the data. I have never known these problems to be predictable, they only are discovered after a conversion.

My approach is: before uninstalling the old version, make a Quicken copy of the data and Validate that Copy. Then you will have your regular old unvalidated data, an your regular old Validated data. You can then uninstall the old version, install the new version, and convert either of the old files you like. If the conversion of the unValidated data appears to have a problem, you can easily try converting the Validated data to see if that fixes the problem.

If you do not create the Validated Copy of the old data before you uninstall the old version; and it turns out that you need (or even *think* you need) that old data Validated in order to get the cleanest converted data ... you have to go thru the pain of (at least) reinstalling the old version and validating the old data, then uninstalling the old version. This will probably also call for then reinstalling the new version.

Exactly my experience. I was impressed at how quickly it migrated the data. In the past it has taken 15 - 20 minutes. This time it was 2-3 minutes. So far so good...

BTW, I downloaded it from Amazon.com for 41.00 (+tax)
