I updated from quicken premier 2005 r3 to r4 this week. since i have updated, all online communication through quicken is DEAD. i spoke with a ichat techie from intuit- no help. i unistalled q2005 and reinstalled it. it still doesn't work. any thoughts can be commuicated directly to me at my email. thanks

I tried real hard to communicate my thoughts directly to you at your email, but my ESP was too low. I find myself compelled to use electronic media to communicate.

Sorry, I prefer not to communicate through personal e-mail...

Are you running a firewall? If so, even though it's the same program (R4 vs R3), some firewalls interpret them as being different, and will prevent Internet connections.

That could be the answer. I have Norton firewall. Usually it asks me if I should let a certain program have access and it has a checkbox to allow it to do it all the time. So it never asked me again, UNTIL I upgraded to R4.

If Notan is correct about this, it's scary that tech support didn't know this, eh?

Any decent firewall should ask any time an executable has changed. Guess this time that the update modified the exe file.......

Considering the level of support and the stories I've seen, I would not expect much from Intuit's tech support... even if you paid for it.....

I remember once, more than a decade ago, I was having trouble running Turbotax from a CD. Tech support person told me to run CHKDSK on the CD drive!

For those of you who don't know CHKDSK is designed to look at hard disks for errors on the drive, cross-linked files, etc, and in some cases to fix what it can. Ain't no way CHKDSK could have fixed any corrupted files on the Turbotax CD. Eventually I got them to send me a new disk.

An update from agravation central:

Shutting the Symantec firewall works. However, when the firewall is reestablished, it doesn't. I have tried to force Norton to accept Quicken by changing several settings but it is fitting back. Any links to solutions?

One solution would be to uninstall, then reinstall Norton. When the program, again, asks for permission to connect Quicken to the Internet, let it.

Doesn't the firewall have a log file? There should be some indication of what executable or IP address is being blocked. You should then be able to enter an exception to that exclusion or to permit it.
