Rookie questions about setting up monthly payments

q2016

Could someone with q 2016 please list the detailed steps for setting up an automatic payment of a fixed amount on say the first of month? I need something that my wife who is just an ordinary pc user with just a little experience with quicken can use while I'm in the hospital.

Thank you for your kindness.

Unless you are subscribing to the Quicken Billpay service and paying the monthly fee, you can't pay bills directly from Quicken. You might check with your bank - many offer one off and recurring bill pay service at no charge, usually from your account web page.

Thank you.. I have been paying bills via my bank manually for years. By manually, i mean that i fill out one or more register entries and then update all transactions.

Not true. I don't subscribe and I've been paying bills directly from Quicken for years. As long as your bank supports it, it's easy to do.

Yeah? DOes Quicken ALWAYS get the funds in before the Due Date? How far beforehand do you have to make the transaction? Using Pre-authorized debits, MY payments ALWAYS go through on the final day, Never any problems. Costs me nothing. Fully automated.

Yes. Never had a problem.

For me I think it's four days, but I'm not sure whether it depends on what bank it is.

Same here. MY payments ALWAYS go through on the final day, Never any problems. Costs me nothing. Fully automated.

I never mail checks anymore. I can pay anyone with this. If the bank can't do an EFT (for example to an individual, rather than to a company), it mails a check).

And, if the check gets lost or misdirected, WHO pays the penalties?

Two points:

  1. The check has never been gotten lost or misdirected.

  1. If payment is via a check rather than EFT, payment is to an individual, and there is no penalty.

For a fixed payment like a mortgage payment or any payment that I can arrage the payee to make a withdrawal from my checking account, I do so, and mmake sure it is to be done on the date due. I then make an entry into my BILLS list to name the payee, catergorize it, and all the data I would enter as if I was manually entering it myself. I usually tell Quicken to enter it into the register a day or two before it's due to make sure I won't be short of funds.

That is the easiest way I know to never have to manually enter anything to get a bill paid. Once the authorization is in effect, it becomes their responsibility to initiate the transaction (maybe not legally), but I had only one instance of a late charge. Wjen I called to find why I git the late charge, thay said my payment was received late. I pointed out to them that it was an auto pay that they initiated, and they immediately removed the late payment charge.

This way, there are only 2 parties - you and the payee. With Quicken bill pay or bamk bill pay there are one to two other parties that can cause a problem.

I fully agree with John--involving 3rd parties, e.g. bank or Quicken bill pay, is just asking for trouble.

PRE-authorized debits, as John is recommending, is the best, by far, method of paying reoccurring debts.

Manual? Quicken has a manual?
