Turbotax data file size

Mar 22, 2015 6 Replies

I finished my 2014 taxes and filed them electronically and everything appears ok so far (fed return accepted, waiting for state). But when I was backing up the data file I noticed that the size is now 2 MB where it was about 750 KB for several days while I was working on it.

There is also a temporary file remaining in the directory. These are normally deleted when the file is saved and closed. The larger file seems to open and run ok, but I still wonder about its integrity.

For several years all of my Turbotax data files have always been between 500 KB and 750 KB. Why did the 2014 file suddenly get so large? My tax situation is essentially the same as previous years.

My 2014 is substantially bigger that klast year. Maybe because I had to use TT Premier this year instead of Deluxe?

Mine is about 1.5 MB. Last years was actually about twice that size. I am using Premier this year, so if that was the variable, one would expect it to be bigger this year than last. I think it must depend on what forms you use, but I can't decide exactly what's different. Maybe a bigger schedule D import one year over another?

I am sure, since this is the first year that Obamacare was introduced into the tax forms, that Republicans will add bloating of Turbotax files into the list of sins that Obamacare causes.

But President Cruz today said he'd get rid of every word of it, so you shouldn't be worried that your file will not return to normal size in 2017.

Maybe your return required a pdf attachment. That would explain the increase as it is saved before uploading to the taxing authority.

Before anyone takes me to task - sorry about this - I was being silly.
