Workaround for Quickfill disabled...

...for downloaded transactions?

I bought Quicken 2005 Premier 2005 a few months ago and lately have been trying to catch-up records for the year. The downloaded check records from the credit union do not include the payee, but rather the check number is repeated in that field. Also, the category is not entered through the download.

When I try to manually fill out the missing info, Quickfill works fine with filling in the payee but, very annoyingly, when I opt for a quickfill entry for the payee, the matching category for the payee is not entered or guessed or scrolled-to or anything that could help.

From another post in this group, it appears that Quickfill is not

enabled for the category field of downloaded transactions. It sure gets tiresome manually entering the same categories for the same dozen or so payees that repeat month after month. Quite frankly, I am shocked that the app does not provide options for turning this on for downloaded transactions.

Any suggested workarounds? Within the app's existing options or perhaps there is a setting in the registry that I can change to turn on Quickfill for the downloads?

TIA.

Not sure where you got that info, but it is incorrect. If QuickFill is enabled, it is enabled for all "new" transactions, whether entered manually or "Accept"ed in a download. Quickfill does *not* work on transactions that are already in your register (no matter where they originated): that is, if you modify the payee name of an existing transaction, quickfill will not modify the category/memo/amount.

Naturally, quickfill can not work on payee names like "CHECK" or what have you. The key to the process is to change the payee name before you "Accept" the downloaded transaction.

Select the downloaded transaction in the "Accept transactions into register" window; you will then see the transaction appear in the register above. Before clicking Accept, modify the payee name in the register, then click Accept; quickfill should then be able to find the appropriate memorized transaction and apply any category/memo/amount that is appropriate.

By whatever name, Quicken definitely completes the payee's name (assuming it has been memorized) as I start typing it into transactions that have been downloaded and already accepted.

Re the problem at hand tho, the next time I download, I'll try your suggestion of changing the name before accepting. Thx.

Unfortunately, a few days ago, I downloaded over two months worth of data into multiple accts so still have any more to manually scroll to the category and select. Bottom-line is that it appears that Intuit did not fully implement this automation feature, which could have been quite useful, especially if the app provided the option of toggling it on-off.

I never intended to say otherwise. Generally we talk about Quickfill as if it were just one capability; but it really is two separate capabilities: completing a field when enough characters have been entered to determine a unique value (Quicken calls it, "Complete fields using previous entries"), and filling in the remaining fields in a transaction based on a memorized transaction for the payee (Quicken calls it, "Recall memorized transactions"). Your problem related to recalling memorized transactions.

I disagree; I think they did fully implement it. I think they don't believe it would be a good idea to modify the other fields of an existing transaction, just because the payee name changes ... even if there is a memorized transaction for that payee. It's been that way for a long time; I doubt they left it that way because they forgot or didn't have the time to change the way it worked.

And you can turn quickfill off; but you must turn off both of its capabilities, despite the fact that they are specified separately in Quicken preferences.

Enabling a toggle would have saved me 2-3 hours of work and the toggle option would enable others readily not to use it when it is undesireable.
