18866 terms of agreement

It still costs them, and as previously posted here, it's well over

0.5p/minute.

I don't believe that to be true.

Well, there you go.

Excluding other interconnect costs, levies, etc etc.,

1xxx daytime is between 0.4677 and 1.1301p depending on distance evening is between 0.2137 and 0.5174 weekend is between 0.1683 and 0.4074

What this means for an average operator is costs of around 0.8/0.4/0.3p (day/evening/weekend) per minute to get the call in from the BT network.

On reflection, as they are obviously using VOIP, perhaps they are hoping to build up a huge userbase then clean up when the whole of BT switches to VOIP.

I'm not sure how that would work, but within the next two or three years, all the balls will be thrown into the air, and how they come down may be very different to what ewe expect.

Having a few million signed-up customers may mean a good long-term profit.

Read the thread on uk.telecom (only, not x-posted; I don't know which group you're reading this thread on) entitled "18866.co.uk". It appears access via the 18866 prefix is still 0p/min (with a 1p connection charge) but it's 0.5p/min (and 14p to mobiles) via the 0808 dialin.
