Barclaycard Fraud Tel Line?

Howdy,

Ok - for the last 2 or 3 months I've started receiving Barclaycard statements sent to my address.

They're not address to me - but at my place I live on my own and the particular addressee is a new one on me (I've been living here for 2 years and I recognise all the names of previous tenants that I still get email to.

I've been sending this back to Barclaycard with a 'Not known at this address' message written on them. I would've thought they would want to sort this out ASAP because it'll mean that either someone's got the wrong address on their account - and they're not receiving their statements, or someone is being very naughty and lied to them...

However, they're still sending them here. So, today I thought I'd be even more public spirited and give them a call to let them know there's a problem and they might want to call up the person who's account it is to confirm the address. However, to call their customer services number (0870 154 0154) you need to give your barclaycard number before you can do anything. Which I don't have.

So, does anyone know if there's a better number to call about this?

You could try their "card lost or stolen" line - 01604 230230. They accept reverse charge calls so it needn't cost you anything.

Try opening the statement and getting the card number off it, then you can speak to them about it !

You can usually get help from the Personal Banker at your local bank.

Isn't opening someone elses mail illegal? Isn't there a banking ombudsman he can report Barclays to?

How do you know it is someone elses mail? If a letter is addressed to my address I open it regardless of the name on it. The letter is sent to the address not the name. Ron

Unless it's addressed to "The Occupier", that's complete tosh.

There was talk of this scenario on uklm a few months back. Apparently the consensus (as I remember it) was that :-

(1) True, it is illegal to open someone else's mail **while in the mailing system**; (2) Once the "mail" reaches the address it was sent to, it is no longer "in the mailing system" and therefore it is no longer illegal to open it - it has been delivered successfully.

That is what I said, once in my house it is mine. Ron

It hasn't been delivered successfully. It went to the wrong person.

Yes it has - it has been delivered to the address on the front of the mail. [Assuming of course that the address on the mail *is* where it ended up!]

Do you expect the postman to knock on the door, ask for ID and only give the mail to the named person? Where I live, Royal Mail only deliver to the *building* - not to the

*person*!

"Jonathan Bryce" wrote

Yep, that's because it was incorrectly addressed. But that doesn't make it illegal to open it!!

I remember a postman being quite put out when I refused to sign for a recorded delivery letter that was meant for someone who lived 1 mile up the road. The doornumber on the envelope was mine but the postcode pointed to another set of buildings. Apparently postcodes are not used much in sorting of letters for delivery.

That seems clear, but what happens if the mail is incorrectly delivered (I'm often getting my next door neighbours mail)? It would be unfortunate if it were legal to open someone's elses mail if it was correctly addressed but just turned up at the wrong place.
