Cancelling Direct Debit ???

Hi,

I am in the process of sorting out my elderly father's finances and wish to cancel a load of direct debits he has set up. Obviously I now the bank can just cancel them, but am I under any obligation with the companies concerned to also let them know?. This could prove difficult in some cases as I don't have any contact information. Any advise gratefully appreciated.

Regards,

Steve.

If you cancel a direct debit, in the majority of cases the company will write to you in one form or another. Be careful the direct debits being cancelled are not for bills, especially credit card - there can be hefty fees made by some companies for being unable to collect a direct debit even if the initial amount is tiny.

You should really contact both the bank and the organisation taking the payment to cancel it. The bank should be able to give you contact details for any of the organisations you're not sure about.
