Does anyone know what the furthest ahead is that I have to validate for on a credit card form? ie. what is the latest expiry date I might expect to see on a card. For various reasons that I don't agree with, client has chosen a drop list with finite values in it. It seems that 5 years isn't enough for some cards and 10 years is suggested as a maximum although in practice noone issues cards with that longevity.

An interesting question. Take a look at what other on-line forms go up to. For a definitive answer I think you will have to contact some card issuers.

Is there any particular problem having a list which goes 10 or 20 years ahead? The standard country list is a lot longer than that!
The solution in mind has a combination month and year field. 20 years 12*20 or 240 entries and is rather unwieldy
The standard country list is a total nuisance and goes against every usability design lesson I've ever learned about sensible numbers of entries in drop lists

Thats just stupid, every site I've been to has had seperate month and year fields, whether blank or drop down lists. BTW, if you have an alpha list of months please put the numerics in there as well, ie "jan(1), feb(2) etc to cut down on errors.
Its not uncommon, especially in US web sites, to have US at the top of the list. UK companies dont seem to put UK at top of list very often though.
