Orange/CPW multiple credit checks

Just got my credit report from Equifax and have found four entries by Orange - two when I originally ordered the 3510i cashback deal, and two more about a week later when they sent me a replacement handset (as I got someone else's SIM card with the first one and they had to take it all back and send another).

Two questions really:

  1. Is it normal to have two checks for each contract phone application?
  2. Is it normal for them to check me again for the new phone/SIM despite me already having an Orange account? I think this is a little unfair as, to the best of my knowledge, this could look very bad on my credit report, and wasn't actually my fault.

I'm thinking about adding a Notice of Correction as I thought I would only have 2 searches in the past 6 months, but now actually have five (!) - however, if there is a better way (e.g. speak to Orange/CPW about it?) I will do that instead.

Many TIA for any advice, Claire

Speak to Orange first.

I used to live in a flat at 10 Lancaster House, Brathway Road and the credit agencies listed the inhabitants of 10 Brathway Road on my credit report as well. They even attempted to justify it! Most financial institutions are incompetent.

Sorry, I was up late last night due to the deadline and catching up on other accounting stuff. My exact address was 10 Lancaster House, 71 Brathway Road and nowhere near 10 Brathway Road.

Four checks will not look particularly bad, IIRC the checks only stay on the record for 6 months, and you would need to have lots for it to be a significant problem. Someone moving house could easily rack up a couple of dozen checks (mortgage, utilities, furniture, appliances etc).

Thanks Stephen and Peter for your advice. Having just wangled a month's free line rental out of Orange I'm a bit wary of making a nuisance of myself again but I still might phone them and see what they have to say. Something tells me this is CPW's doing but since it's down as Orange I guess I should take it up with them.

Thanks again!
